Dr Kylie Smith is Senior Research Fellow at Menzies Institute for Medical Research. She is a Nutritional Epidemiologist and a Registered Public Health Nutritionist. She leads a program of work that aims to improve children’s nutrition at school, including school lunch programs, school canteens, and school breakfast programs.

This research is conducted in collaboration with Public Health Services, Department of Health and School Food Matters (previously known as the Tasmanian School Canteen Association).

Her other research areas include using data from large cohort studies to examine longitudinal associations between eating behaviours and metabolic health and mental health; and the influences and consequences of breakfast skipping in children

Biography

Before joining the University of Tasmania, Kylie was a Research Assistant at the University of Otago (New Zealand). She has also been employed as a Junior Research Fellow at Deakin University (Melbourne).

Description
This project will conduct an evaluation of the 2022-23 Tasmanian State Government funded school lunch pilot to:* identify the benefits and challenges of providing a school lunch program;* estimate the costs of providing a school lunch program;* examine associations between the school lunch program and school attendance, student wellbeing and academicperformance.Data will be collected from at least six schools using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Feedback will be obtainedfrom key stakeholders (students, parents, food service staff and volunteers, school staff).
