Steve Simpson, Jr's research is predominantly in the field of multiple sclerosis epidemiology, particularly its geoepidemiology and the distribution and determinants of its clinical course. He also works in HR-HPV-associated neoplasia and sexual health. The highlights of Steve's work heretofore has been:

  • Meta-analysis of global MS prevalence and the latitudinal gradient thereof
  • The developing role of vitamin D and sun/UV in multiple sclerosis onset and clinical course
  • Evaluating the female preponderance of HR-HPV-mediated anal neoplasia

Biography

Steve is an early-career researcher in the field of multiple sclerosis. Following undergraduate training in biology at Hunter College in New York City and postgraduate studies in public health and infectious disease at the University of California, Berkeley, both of which he completed with high distinction, Steve undertook doctoral research in multiple sclerosis geoepidemiology and predictors of clinical course at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania between 2008-2011, completing his PhD with high distinction in 2011. After a year of postdoctoral research on the same topic, also at Menzies, he was awarded an MSRA postdoctoral research fellowship in 2012, under which he continue to work at the present.

Assessing the HR-HPV types in stored cervical excision samples for comparison with anal HR-HPV carriage in TasGANS (2016)$10,000
Description
We previously showed a significant association of post-toilet front-to-back and dabbing behaviours with occurrence of anal cancer precursors and cancer-causing HPV types. We want to substantiate the within-person autoinoculation route by comparing HR-HPV types present in stored cervical excision samples with those found in TasGANS anal samples.

DEVA MS: DEvelopment and VAlidation of a cost effectiveness simulation model for Multiple Sclerosis and implications for health policy (2015 - 2016)$160,000
Description
The number of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is increasing dramatically in Australia, with rapidly escalating associated costs, both direct due to medical expenses and indirect due to lost or reduced employment. Existing and upcoming treatments for MS are expensive, with current prices of up to $25,000 per patient per year and rising. Using the best available data, this study will identify the treatments that are greatest value for money for the most common form of MS (relapsing-remitting MS), with a goal to reduce wastage of limited healthcare resources.

Case-control study in Primary Progressive MS: Are the risk factors the same as for people with RRMS onset and can we identify new ones? (2015 - 2016)$142,000
Description
Examining risk factors of disease by comparing cases with a disease to healthy controls has been critical in understanding the aetiology of diseases. In MS, for example, important progress has been made through the epidemiological findings that cases were more likely to have had infectious mononucleosis, have high anti-EBNA IgG titres, and have low sun exposure levels. These findings resulted in a large body of laboratory work focusing on the mechanisms behind these observations. We have previously conducted epidemiological case-control studies on MS, but the number of people with PPMS was always too low to conduct a sub-analysis to examine whether the risk factors that we identified were also important in those with PPMS. We now propose to conduct a case-control of PPMS in a very cost-effective way, by using the data already collected on a large sample of healthy controls (n=558) from the Ausimmune study. We aim to collect the same data from a sample of cases with PPMS in Australia and compare that to the controls of the Ausimmune study. Moreover, the longer-term vision is that this data will form the basis for a prospective longitudinal study, where the cases with PPMS will be followed over time, in order to examine factors that are associated with the progression of MS. This will then be important for identifying possible treatments in MS for people with PPMS. Hypotheses*Established risk factors in MS, including low sun exposure, infectious mononucleosis, smoking, high anti-EBV-EBNA IgG and HLA-DR15 genotype are associated with an increased risk of PPMS onset.*Low parity, lack of younger sibling exposure and exposure to livestock are associated with an increased risk of PPMS.*People with PPMS have a higher EBV DNA load in whole blood and altered EBV serology compared to people with a RRMS onset.

The relationship between Immunoglobulin E (IgE), disease severity and the immune response in multiple sclerosis (2014)$15,300
Description
The immune system in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is thought to favour inflammatory responses that preclude allergic reactions and the production of the antibody Immunoglobulin E (IgE). This project proposes that IgE levels are in fact high in some people with MS, and that this is protective. It proposes therefore to measure IgE levels in persons with MS and examine associations between IgE, disease severity and immune function.
