Dr Hannah Murphy-Gregory is a senior lecturer in the Politics and International Relations program of the School of Social Sciences. Her research analyses the contributions of civil society groups to governance and public policy on contentious social, economic, and environmental issues and the interface between business and NGOs. Hannah is currently researching certification systems as forms of governance and the concept of social licence.
Biography
Hannah joined the University of Tasmania in 2009 as an associate lecturer in public policy and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2019. She has performed various roles including Discipline Coordinator Public Policy. She currently serves as the Academic Integrity Adviser for the School of Social Sciences.

Expertise
Hannah’s research seeks to enhance knowledge of the roles of stakeholders in policy-making at the local national, and global levels. This knowledge enables NGOs, industry, and governments to gauge the impact of civil society campaigns on policy-making, promote stakeholder engagement, and enhance policy effectiveness. Hannah has applied this knowledge to charting and evaluating NGO campaigning regarding the Tasmanian seafood industry, multinational corporate tax avoidance, and certification schemes in the areas of fair trade, forestry and aquaculture.

Hannah's latest research focuses on the governance roles of environmental NGOs in Australia and she is currently co-editing a research handbook on NGOs in Global Governance for the publisher Edward Elgar (UK). Hannah's work seeks to help explain the roles and contributions of NGOs to politics in Australia and at international organisations.
Awards
- Hannah’s PhD thesis was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2010 Australian Political Studies Association (APSA) Thesis Prize, awarded annually to the best dissertation/s by Australian political science PhD graduates. The prize is determined by a panel of the Executive Committee of APSA.
- Hannah’s co-authored book, 21st Century Australian Politics (Cambridge University Press) won the Educational Publishing Awards Australia (EPAA) 2019 category award for Tertiary (Wholly Australian) Teaching and Learning – blended learning (print and digital).

Publications
Hannah has published books (sole-authored, multi-authored, and co-edited), journal articles, and book chapters that critically analyse NGO campaigning, private governance systems, and government-business-NGO relations. Her books have been published with prominent international publishers, including Cambridge University Press, Edward Elgar and Springer. Hannah’s sole-authored book, The Making of International Trade Policy: NGOs, Agenda-setting and the WTO, was published by Edward Elgar (UK) and contributes knowledge about the parameters of NGO influence in international policy negotiations. For 21st Century Australian Politics, she contributed chapters on ‘Bureaucracy and Public Policy’ and ‘Citizen Participation and Engagement’ and co-wrote the book’s introduction. Hannah’s journal articles appear in high-ranking journals in the governance and public policy field, including Journal of Cleaner Production, Environmental Politics, International Affairs, Review of International Political Economy, and Global Policy.

- The project aims to assist policy analysts to devise a sustainable certification scheme for hydrogen that meetsmultistakeholder requirements. Its significance lies in challenging a techno-economic mindset focusing only on thefuel's carbon intensity within a production plant. Taking a comparative historical approach, and incorporating theviews of energy experts and stakeholders, the expected outcome is options for a new sustainable certificationscheme that addresses all technical, economic, social, environmental and governance requirements.
