Dr Max Travers is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences. He has published studies about the work of defence lawyers, judicial officers in immigration appeals tribunals and children's courts, and is currently researching bail decision making and pretrial services. He has written textbooks on qualitative research methods and sociology of law, and a monograph about the rise of quality assurance as a new form of regulation. He has contributed to Asian and comparative criminology through co-editing Comparative Criminology in Asia (2017).

Biography

Max qualified as a solicitor in the United Kingdom in 1988, before completing a PhD in sociology at the University of Manchester.  He lectured in sociology and criminology at the University of Plymouth, and Buckinghamshire New University, before moving to the University of Tasmania in 2003.

Research Themes

Max's research aligns to the University's research theme of Better Health, understood broadly as social well being. There are debates on how the criminal justice process can contribute to social well being: through punishment; or through addressing the social factors that result in offending.   Max has contributed through conducting ethnographic projects that describe, in some detail, how judicial decisions are made. He has examined the outcomes and experiences of marginalised groups, as well as seeking to understand professional work and perspectives.  This work has humanistic objectives:  to make people reflect on the moral basis of justice, and whether we can do things differently. Max's research on bureaucracy and 'red tape' has similar objectives in looking at administrative systems and practices in public sector organisations (The New Bureaucracy 2007).

Collaboration

Max collaborates with a number of individuals and groups.   He is currently coordinator of a project on bail decision making and pretrial services, with colleagues in the University of Tasmania and three other universities.  In 2013, he co-edited a special issue of Current Issues in Criminal Justice on Ethnography, crime and criminal justice.  He has co-edited collections with Reza Banakar (University of Lund, Sweden). He is currently applying with colleagues for grants to support a research project on retirement villages.

Publications

Max has published in a variety of ways, including monographs, journal articles, textbooks and through editing collections. He is on the editorial board of Qualitative Research, and writes book reviews for Qualitative Research.

Max's recent participation in a national study of children's courts resulted in the publication of The Sentencing of Children. The book covers youth justice policy, the welfare model, and the criminology and sociology of law. It raises issues for academics and practitioners in juvenile justice and criminologist concerned with understanding the criminal justice process.

Max's project on bail decision-making with others has resulted in the publication of Rethinking Bail: Court Reform or Business as Usual?

Contracts in the retirement village sector: Assessing consumers attitudes and understanding (2018)$16,991

Anecdotal evidence and case studies have raised national concern about the equity of contracts in retirement villages. This research aims to: (a) scope the nature and scale of the problem; (b) highlight the gaps in empirical knowledge; (c) conduct an empirical pilot study to assess consumers' perceptions of and experiences with aged care contracts; and (d) explore some of the policy options that might be productive for restoring an equity in aged care contracts.

Critical issues in the creation of dementia friendly communities: Maintaining housing for early and mid stage clients and their carers (2016)$6,990
Description
Project objectives:*To better understand community attitudes to people with early and mid stage dementia living in community, with a view to developing policies to assist private housing providers in their provision of services to people with dementia living in the community. This paper grows out of Dr. Erika Altmann's publications on the housing industry at the University of Tasmania and supervised by Dr. Max Travers. It draws from and builds on the success of the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre in the provision of outstanding on-line educational courses demonstrated through the MOOC to deliver better health outcomes and the experience Erika has gained through working on projects at Wicking with Dr Doherty and others. *To develop the necessary evidence base upon which to mount higher level grant applications with a view to developing, where necessary, intervention practices that assist people with dementia to live in community for longer. The 2017 DCRC round is targeted.*To develop cross disciplinary collaborations between academics within the ABL, Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre and Faculty of Health Sciences with a view to tackling a major cultural challenge facing local, national and international societies.*To develop the research skills of early career researchers and provide sufficient mentoring to enable them to build their research careers and enhance UTAS capacity.
