Omar Ben Haman is a PhD researcher in the School of Social Sciences, University of Tasmania. His current research focuses on two areas: the urban integration of slum dwellers in the Global South and the insidious effects of social exclusion and inequality.
Biography
Omar Ben Haman is a researcher with strong qualitative research experience and author of ''The Moroccan education system, dilemma of language and think-tanks: the challenges of social development for the North African country'' (Routledge, 2020). His master thesis, Conditional Cash Transfer program and women's empowerment: a case study in the Sidi Bouabdelli-Tiznit Province, Morocco, was concerned with how the Cash Transfer Program promotes the social inclusion of rural women in Morocco. He is currently teaching undergraduate and post-graduate Sociological Analysis of Modern Society Course at the University of Tasmania. He has recently joined the Housing and Community Research Unit (HACRU) to examine the consequences of COVID-19 for households in Tasmania, Australia.
He has received three international awards (Sheikh Thani Bin Abdellah Foundation, Tasmanian Scholarship for Postgraduate Research and IDBs Scholarship for High-Achieving Postgraduate Students). Ben’s core PhD supervisor is Professor Keith Jacobs with co-supervisor Dr Catherine Goetze.

Research Themes
Ben’s current research focuses on two main areas: the urban integration of slum dwellers in the Global South and the insidious effects of social exclusion and inequality. He draws on various traditions of German and French sociology, most notably on the works of Max Weber and Pierre Bourdieu. Ben’s PhD research examines the Cities without Slums program in Morocco. His PhD research aims specifically to explore the role of the Cities Without Slums program in responding to the social, economic, and cultural needs of the former slum dwellers in the new settlements. His PhD project will contribute to the sociological and anthropological aspects of the new wave of large-scale “Cities Without Slums” programs in developing world nations, with a specific focus on the context of Morocco’s VSB program.
Ben’s forthcoming publication “The Patterns of Youth Social Exclusion: Lessons from the Kingdom of North Africa”. The journal article critically discusses such manifestations of youth social exclusion, by focusing profoundly on the issues related to youth unemployment and informal economy in Morocco.

- Regional recovery from COVID-19 may follow a different trajectory to that of large cities. To manage the differences, policymakers will need data on how regional areas are coping and their emerging needs. This project will generate data on regional housing and household experiences arising from the pandemic.
