Dr Oscar Vorobjovas-Pinta is the Course Coordinator for Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Tourism, Environmental & Cultural Heritage, and a Lecturer in Tourism and Society at the School of Social Sciences in the College of Arts, Law and Education. Oscar is a leading expert on LGBTQI+ communities in the context of tourism, events, leisure, and hospitality. His research interests are the sociology of tourism, tourist behaviour, Antarctic tourism, extending ethnographic and qualitative research methods into tourism research, and technology-enhanced tourism experiences. Oscar is the President of the Australia and New Zealand Association for Leisure Studies (ANZALS) and a Board Director of Visit Northern Tasmania.

Biography

Oscar obtained his PhD in Tourism from the University of Tasmania, a Bachelor of Science (European Studies) from the University of Southern Denmark and a Bachelor of Business Administration (Tourism and Hospitality Management) from Vilnius University of Applied Sciences. Before re-joining the University of Tasmania in 2022, Oscar was a Lecturer in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management in the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University (Perth, Australia).

Oscar’s primary area of expertise is LGBTQI+ tourism, events, hospitality, and leisure. In 2021, he published an edited book titled Gay Tourism: New Perspectives. His key research interests are niche tourism; Antarctic tourism; tourism in the digital world; extending ethnographic and qualitative research methods into tourism research; social impacts of tourism; and technology-enhanced tourism experiences. Oscar has also a broad interest and industry experience in innovative tourism research and teaching and has been involved in a number of projects focusing on resilience, and on technology-enabled advanced tracking of visitors to Tasmania and Sydney. These projects have each been built on extensive stakeholder and industry engagement.

Oscar is also an award-winning lecturer with a strong focus on innovative teaching and learning. In 2020, he was awarded School of Business and Law (Edith Cowan University) Teaching and Learning Award for Impact on Learning for the innovative teaching in blended modes and the use of technology to enhance online learning. In 2015, Oscar awarded a Teaching Merit Certificate from the University of Tasmania.

Oscar is serves on the Editorial Board of Annals of Tourism Research Empirical Insights and is an Associate Editor of Event Management. He is also a Board Director of Visit Northern Tasmania, a Board Member of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Leisure Studies (ANZALS), a member of the Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE), and a member of the Tourism Research and Education Network (TRENd).

Oskaras has been awarded a 2017 PhD Writing Up Fellowship by the Institute for the Study of Social Change. The Writing Up Fellowship is to provide financial support to UTAS PhD students to assist them in publishing from their research.

Tracking the state of play in the hospitality and tourism industries in Tasmania (2022 - 2024)$64,657

Description: A program of work to provide biannual updates to business and employment statistics derived from Australian Bureau of Statistics data for the hospitality industry, replicate for the tourism industry, and expand the indicators to key areas of interest for the Department. In addition, we will analyse data gaps and conduct primary data collection to begin to fill those gaps.
