Rob White retired from UTAS in June 2021 and is now Emeritus Distinguished Professor at the University of Tasmania.

Emeritus Distinguished Professor Rob White is an internationally recognised criminologist who is considered a pioneer in the area of ‘green criminology’.

Green criminology describes an ecologically informed critical approach to the study of environmental harm. It is a multidisciplinary perspective that encompasses a broad spectrum of issues including transnational environmental crime, pollution crime, water theft and illegal trade in wildlife.

According to Professor White, “Green criminology is fundamentally about eco-justice and eco-justice for me has three key elements: environmental justice that deals with humans; ecological justice that deals with ecosystems and biospheres; and species justice that deals with non-human animals, and plants”.

Professor White’s career has also focussed on youth studies and juvenile justice, rehabilitation and innovative justice, rural criminology, and criminological theory and practice.

Rob White retired from UTAS in June 2021 and is now Emeritus Distinguished Professor at the University of Tasmania.

Rob White is an Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Criminology with a particular interest in ‘green criminology’. His research focused on social and ecological justice, criminology and youth studies. He is also interested in innovative justice, particularly restorative justice, rehabilitation and desistance from crime.
