Recovering from Ethical Bankruptcy: Why Management Accounting is More Important than Ever…

Investors have favoured bank shares in Australia for years because they are a sure thing. No balance sheet looks better than that of a bank. Bank shares are safe; or are they? As the Royal Commission into the banks continues, issues of transparency and accountability have never been so important.

While the full extent of the conduct of some of Australia’s most blue chip companies remains unclear, what is clear is that today, shareholders are interested in more than just profits. How can managers of institutions achieve profits for shareholders, yet ensure they are accountable in the broader sense?

How do they measure the performance of their business as a whole, so they can develop the strategies necessary to achieve this balance?

Professor Lisa McManus is a management accountant. Her research focus is to find the best way of measuring and reporting on every aspect of a business, so that management can make optimum decisions.

“There’s a growing interest in management accounting because it’s what management is all about,” says Professor McManus. “Accounting is not just about numbers. You only need to open a newspaper to see that shareholders care about more than just profits.”

“People expect ethical business practices too. Shareholders are becoming more cognisant of the impact that organisations have on the environment, and also how they treat their customers and staff,” says Professor McManus. “It is no longer acceptable for managers to only focus on profits.”

“My research is designed to refine how the accounting profession reports to managers, so they can make optimum decisions for the short and long term,” explains Professor McManus.

“My underlying research questions are always, ‘how can an organisation be the best it can be? How does management achieve its mission, and how does the information that accountants provide feed into that?’”

“If you don’t measure something, it doesn’t matter,” explains Professor McManus. “Only a detailed report that measures every facet of a business allows managers to develop and enact a vision, a mission and a strategy.”

“Managers need to know exactly where they are, and what they need to achieve, to get where they want to be,” says Professor McManus. “The question is, how do we provide the best and correct information to managers for their organisation in all its different circumstances?”

Professor McManus looks at what is being done and what the circumstances are, from a financial, customer internal process and human resource perspectives. She looks at internal processes and organisational capacity, as well as environmental impact among other things. Professor McManus identifies questions, and then undertakes research to answer them.

“Every organisation has a maximum level of what they can achieve,” explains Professor McManus. “Management needs to know they are achieving maximum output, both efficiently and ethically.”

“I love solving problems,” laughs Professor McManus. “I love gathering data, analysing the data and answering questions. I really am passionate about my work.”

“Management can’t make good decisions without the information that accountants provide. Without our profession they’re making decisions blind,” says Professor McManus.

“If management can make great decisions that are informed by relevant information, and their mission is accomplished efficiently and ethically as a result of my contribution to knowledge, then that is incredibly rewarding.”
