Emily Hilder
Adjunct Professor
Chemistry
Off-Campus
Professor Emily Hilder works in separation science, which involves taking samples of complex substances like blood and separating and identifying the components. Traditionally, analyses have been made back at the lab but Emily and her team are devising portable solutions.

"We use this for mostly looking at bomb markers... in counter terrorism research. We are recognised as being one of the absolute centres of excellence in this area... We have some of the best separation scientists in the world all in one location working together... It's absolutely exciting. It's really an international field where there are no boundaries."
Emily Hilder - April 2012
The science of separation enables a multitude of new connections
Portable testing technology enables immediate results in the field
Emily is Director of a new centre at the University of Tasmania, the ARC Training Centre for Portable Analytical Separation Techniques – ASTech.
'ASTech is a partnership with industry, where we take large analytical technology and make it more portable. We aim to bring the technology to the user rather than having to take samples to a lab somewhere.
'Healthcare is a typical application. If you could do a blood test in the doctor's surgery, doctor and patient can discuss the results on the spot. It's a far more active treatment scenario.'
Portable instrumentation has all kinds of applications in addition to healthcare, including environmental monitoring, food analysis, and detecting homemade explosives.
'I'm really excited about the new centre because we're dealing with new technology,' said Emily.
Working with industry brings new challenges too; Emily feels that academia can sometimes feel disconnected from the 'real world'.
'People in industry have a completely different approach – they're thinking about the bigger picture in a different way to that of academics. They are thinking of the outcome rather than the output. Industry thinks about what can this do, why do we need it, what will it change? They're also interested in something that's going to give a commercial edge. The timelines can be stressful though – there's a different sense of urgency than academics usually experience,' said Emily.
'Our research has us working with biologists, clinicians, engineers, mathematicians – we have the most fun when we work at the edge of our own understanding, where there's the most potential to make a difference. I get to ask the stupid questions and I'm always learning something new, seeing it in a different way. Often our breakthroughs have happened when we've moved into a new field and branched into areas we didn't have formal training in.'
'I want my team to feel they can do anything, try anything, and to have the resources to expand and grow.'
'We have a lot of amazing researchers here. It's exciting for them to recognise that they're doing work that's as good as anywhere else in the world,' said Emily.
'I never thought I'd end up in science. I was just interested in anything creative. It turns out I love science because of the creativity. I'm always thinking of new ways to do things, how to improve them. There are no rules.'

Expertise
My research interests lie in the general area of separation science, in particular the combination of chromatographic and electrophoretic separation mechanisms to solve complex separation problems such as for sample of biological or pharmaceutical origin, and the development of novel materials to facilitate this. This includes the synthesis of novel polymeric monolithic materials as selective adsorbents for sample preparation/ pretreatment, chromatographic stationary phases and other applications in analytical chemistry. I am also interested in the development of miniaturised analytical systems, particularly for applications in clinical diagnostics and remote monitoring.

- Description
- Transmission electron microscopy is a fundamental tool for the study of biological systems at the ultrastructural level. Tasmania has only one, aged and barely functioning electron microscopy facility. This proposal is to establish a State-wide facility that will be accessible to a range of biological researchers across Tasmania, as well as the CSIRO and Antarctic Division. The proposed instrument will be established in new purpose-built laboratory space in the UTAS Medical Sciences Precinct, and will be supported by the Central Science Laboratory. The instrument will revitalise cellular research in Tasmania, and provide additional insights and outcomes related to the study of intracellular features in a diverse range of systems and models.

- Description
- This project focuses on the preparation and chemical modification of porous monolithic polymers, which are essentially a single piece of continuous porous material. These materials represent a new generation of stationary phases for chromatography, offering significant benefits over currently used materials, leading already to successful commercial embodiments. However, improvements in this technology rely on being able to accurately characterize the porous structure. The porous structure of monolithic materials is usually examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), however the information obtained with this technique is limited and a comprehensive analysis of the monolithic structure (e.g. chemical mapping) cannot be performed. Another technique used to study the structure of monolithic columns is confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). However, this technique requires the use of dyes which are not always easy to covalently bind to the support surface. It is well known that the structural homogeneity of monolithic columns is a key parameter to be considered for the development of highly efficient stationary phases and new characterisation techniques are needed to gain a more complete understanding of the polymer morphology. In this sense, the relatively high penetration power of X-rays would allow a comprehensive analysis of the radial and longitudinal heterogeneity of polymer monoliths.

- Description
- This project describes the synthesis and design of new stationary phases for micro- and nano-scale separations. A range of functional polymer nanoparticles will be synthesized using RAFT controlled polymerization and used as pseudo stationary phases in electrokinetic chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Further, directed assembly of these nanoparticles at a liquid-liquid interface will be used to form novel supracolloidal monoliths as stationary phases for chromatography. Using this approach it will also be possible to create materials with different microenvironments within the same device. The use of these materials will be demonstrated for the separation of biologically relevant molecules.

- Description
- This project will develop new ion-exchange stationary phases based on the self-assembly of functionalised nanoparticles onto a scaffold formed from a porous polymer monolith. Reproducible, predictable and scalable synthetic procedures for the monolithic scaffolds will be devised. New, non-destructive methods for characterising these scaffolds will be studied, including the optical visualisation of flow patterns and the examination of radial and axial homogeneity using optical methods and contactless conductivity detection. Finally, the chromatographic performance of the new materials will be evaluated and related back to the characterisation data to permit rational design of new stationary phases.

- Description
- This project aims to develop new methods for the reproducible and predictable synthesis and characterisation of new classes of fundamentally and commercially significant analytical stationary phases for the macro, micro and nano scale separation of a range of target analytes, based on the core concept of nanostructured monolithic polymers. These new stationary phases will be used for many applications including high-speed isolation, separation and quantification of pharmaceutical targets in complex biological matrices and high resolution separations of biomolecules such as biotechnology-derived pharmaceuticals and disease biomarkers. It will lead to major advances in their performance in a range of nationally significant areas.
