Microplastics pollution from ports and shipping activities in the Indo-Pacific: Potential risks and mitigation strategies (2022 - 2023)$99,904
Description
Project purpose:To examine microplastic pollution associated with ports and shipping activities and to assist maritime industry stakeholders in the Indo-Pacific in finding practical and viable solutions for reducing ocean plastic contamination.Project aims:1.To explore differences in the levels of microplastic contamination in port and non-port sites across two geographical locations using a range of techniques.2.To develop policy imperatives and microplastic pollution mitigation strategies for the maritime industry based on literature review, scientific evidence obtained from data collected from the Indo-Pacific region, and an international stakeholder workshop.3.To raise awareness of microplastics pollution caused by ports and shipping activities and to promote best practices among maritime industry stakeholders including, but not limited to, governments, regulators, maritime industry associations, port authorities, ship operators, maritime workers and the scientific community.4.To progress the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) through collaboration and engagement between researchers and maritime stakeholders in Australia and India, and the wider Indo-Pacific maritime community.

Maritime Supply Chains in the Indo-Pacific Region: Resilience, Security and Implications for Australian Defence (2021)$234,325
Description
Approximately 99% of Australia's trade is carried by sea, mostly through the Indo-Pacific region, which is susceptible to growing security threats and disruptions. This project examines the impacts of those threats, especially a military conflict in the South China Sea, on Australian maritime supply chains, and policy implications for Defence.

Vietnam Australia web-based supply chain collaboration platform (2021)$36,222
Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread impacts on virtually every sector of the global economy, causing significant disruption of global supply chains. The unprecedented effect of such a pandemic and the resultant restrictions imposed in many countries have revealed acute bottlenecks in supply chain links in many trade regions, including Australia and Vietnam. These bottlenecks have been reported to cause disruption to both domestic trade, export, import and cross-border trade.

Economic Assessment of Blue Economy (2020)$49,396
Description
The blue economy concept varies substantially across studies and countries. There exist different approaches to planning and evaluating blue economy. This study reviews and develops economic assessment frameworks for Sustainable BE Developments (RP5). A systematic review will be conducted to draw upon the knowledge and experience across countries/regions. Based on this, economic assessment frameworks, including national economic accounting, input-output tables, computer general equilibrium, stated, revealed and deliberative monetary valuation approaches and ecosystem service value and natural capital accounting frameworks will be developed for both market and non-market goods and services.

TEAM RESILIENCE: ENHANCING THEORY AND APPLICATION IN MARITIME EMERGENCY RESPONSE (2019)$4,500
Description
Maritime accident prevention and emergency response remain one of the most challengingareas for research and training despite efforts made by researchers, industry, regulatory bodies.Conventional approaches to emergency response training have shown sub-optimal outcomes inunexpected escalating emergencies.Based on their work with NASA, Alliger et al (2015) have noted that approaches involving teamresilience are "clearly essential" for optimising emergency responses. More recently, teamresilience has been identified as an approach that improves personnel performance andoutcomes in escalating situations (Stevens et al., 2015, Hollnagel, 2017). Both of these factorssupport an investigation into the value of using team resilience to enhance conventionalapproaches to maritime accident and emergency response both in theory and in practice.

Description
The main objective of this research is to study the implications of China's economic growth for Australia's logistics sector. Specifically, it attempts to achieve the following objectives: a) examine the dynamics of the trade relationship between Australia and China (particularly, the nature of trade between Australia and China, before and after China's policy of economic integration); b) assess the capacity and constraints of the Australian logistics sector in accommodating the changing pattern of trade between Australia and China; c) based on the findings from a) and b), draw out business and policy implications of the development of the Australian logistics sector.
