Hung is a lecturer and researcher at the Australian Maritime College in the College of Science and Engineering. His research interests are in the fields of automatic control engineering, guidance, navigation and control of marine vehicles, modelling and simulation of marine and offshore systems, including underwater vehicles, maritime electric engineering and powering, and advanced and intelligent control methods, and machine learning.

Biography

Before joining the University of Tasmania, he trained in a nautical science course at the Vietnam Maritime University, graduating in November 1991. On graduating, Hung started working as a lecturer in ship manoeuvring and as a seafarer a Vietnam Maritime University. In 1995, he received a Japanese government scholarship (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Monbukagaksuho in Japanese, Scholarship) and studied Japanese at Tokyo Institute of Technology and as a research student at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. He finished a Master’s course in marine systems engineering in March 1998 and his PhD course in marine control engineering at the same university in March 2001. Upon completion of his PhD, Hung worked as an R&D engineer for a Japanese nuclear gauge manufacturer in Japan until August 2002. In 2002, Hung moved to Tasmania to take up a position as a lecturer in marine control engineering at the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania.  Since then, he has been a full-time academic at the AMC.

Brief Description: Applications of identification procedures, wireless techniques, navigation techniques and acoustics in modelling and control of autonomous underwater vehicles and marine robots.

Brief Description: Applications of online estimation methods such as recursive least square algorithm and recursive prediction error algorithm to estimate ship steering dynamics, using GPS/GNSS techniques and applications of control theories to design computer-based control systems (autopilot, dynamic position system, etc.) for marine vehicles (surface and underwater vehicles).

Hung's research aligns to the AMC's research themes of maritime engineering and hydrodynamics. His research interests include

  • Marine Robots and Control Applications in Underwater Vehicles.

The main aims of his research projects are to:

  • Build new model-scaled vehicles
  • Implement model-scaled and full-scaled experiments with the hydrodynamics facilities;
  • Estimate the transient hydrodynamic coefficients of vehicles through experiments and numerical models;
  • Interface the CFD and MATLAB/Simulink models or LabVIEW or other programming languages with hardware (joysticks and keyboard);
  • Develop methods for human interfacing simulation and Real-time control of IMVs; and
  • Develop control algorithms and hardware for educational and commercial purposes.

Collaboration

Hung is currently collaborating with Dr Jonathan Binns and Dr Dev Ranmuthugala of the DSTC in the areas of underwater vehicles and defence engineering and technologies and with Prof Neil Bose and the AUV team at the Memorial University in Newfoundland (MUN) in the areas of replanning, guidance, navigation and control of underwater vehicles for underwater missions.

Publications

In recent years, Hung’s publications have focused on the modelling, simulation and control of marine vehicles, especially high-performance control of underwater vehicles for underwater missions and performance of an underwater vehicle equipped with collective and cyclic pitch propeller (CCPP) operating at low speed. The main publication and contributions according to years are as follows:

2021: Renewable energy, a new type of propulsion system for underwater vehicles, neural network-based control algorithm for surface vessels, and modelling of marine vehicles.

2014: Publications are related to modelling, simulation and control of underwater vehicles, and control of ROVs using the haptic technique.

2013: Publications focus on the performance of an underwater vehicle equipped with a CCPP.

2012 and previous years: Numerical simulation and control of underwater vehicles, self-tuning and optional control systems, system identification of marine vehicles.

Research Supervision

Since 2002, Hung has supervised many undergraduate students who completed their research projects related to automatic control systems for process systems and marine vehicles with both numerical and experimental approaches. This includes a maximum of 15 postgraduate research students in 2017, supervision of 18 successfully completed HDR candidates to date, and current two PhDs in progress. I also supervise a number of final year research students and Master by coursework dissertation students every year.

HDR and final year/Master research projects are mainly related to intelligent marine vehicles and robotics: These projects involve development of new types of Intelligent Marine Vehicles (IMVs) including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), and their control systems as well as human interfacing simulation. Prototypes used for these projects are three-thrusters ROV/AUV, AUVs namely Explorer and REMUS 100 (of AMC Autonomous Maritime System Lab), low cost/open hardware ROVs/AUVs, and model scaled surface vessels, process control systems in Control Lab. In addition, projects related to robotic arms and mobile robots are also available.
