Dr Hung Nguyen is a lecturer at the National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics in the Australian Maritime College. He is interested in the fields of marine control engineering.

Biography

Hung was born in Haiphong City, Vietnam. He trained in a nautical science course, at the Vietnam Maritime University, graduating in November 1991.  On graduating, Hung started working as a lecturer in ship manoeuvring and as a seafarer a Vietnam Maritime University. In 1995, he received a Japanese government scholarship (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Monbukagaksuho in Japanese, Scholarship) and studied Japanese at Tokyo Institute of Technology and as a research student at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. He finished a Master's course in marine systems engineering in March 1998, and his PhD course in marine control engineering at the same university in March 2001. On completion of his PhD, Hung worked as an R&D engineer for a Japanese nuclear gauge manufacturer in Japan until August 2002.

In 2002, Hung moved to Tasmania to take up a post as a lecturer in marine control engineering at the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania.

Hung's research interests are in automatic control engineering, guidance, navigation and control of marine vehicles, modelling and simulation of marine and offshore systems including underwater vehicles.

Current projects

Project 1: Virtual reality simulation for underwater vehicle equipped with collective and cyclic pitch propeller (MATLAB/Simulink or LabVIEW). Operating an underwater vehicle with conventional propeller at low speed is difficult as low speed reduces effects of control surfaces and planes. A new type of propeller, namely collective and cyclic pitch propeller, working based on principle of a helicopter rotor is proposed to improve the manoeuvrability of an underwater vehicle.

Project 2: Advanced control system for an underwater vehicle equipped with collective and cyclic propeller. This involves development of advanced/intelligent control system (including both hardware and software) to control an underwater vehicle equipped with collective and cyclic pitch propeller for quantification of its performance.

Project 3: Virtual reality simulation for ROV/AUV using haptic technique. The project involves development of underwater mission scenarios of ROV/AUV based on 3D virtual reality simulation and haptic control techniques.

Project 4: Radial basis function neural network based rudder roll stabilisation system for surface vessel. The project involves development of new rudder-roll stabilisation system and trajectory tracking control for surface vessels in order to optimize the routing and enhance safety of vessels under severe weather conditions.

Research Supervision

Since 2002, Hung has supervised many undergraduate students completed their research projects related to automatic control systems for process systems and marine vehicles with both numerical and experimental approaches. This includes 6 postgraduate research students currently, and two completed PhD's. The following projects are available for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Project 1: Energy based modelling and control of marine vehicles (including underwater vehicles)

Project 2: In-door navigation systems used in model test basin

Project 3: Virtual reality simulation of underwater vehicle equipped with a collective and cyclic pitch propeller (CCPP)

Project 4: Dynamic positioning system for marine surface vehicles (including Bluefin) based on the advanced control algorithm (energy method, neural networks)

Projects related to intelligent marine vehicles and robotics: These projects involve development of new types of Intelligent Marine Vehicles (IMVs) including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), and their control systems as well as human interfacing simulation. Prototypes used for these projects are three-thrusters ROV/AUV, AUV namely GAVIA, low cost ROVs/AUVs, and model scaled surface vessels. In addition, projects related to robotic arms and mobile robots are also available.
