  • Dr Abdussamie completed his PhD at Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania in 2016.
  • Dr Abdussamie commenced his current appointment at the Australian Maritime College in 2017 as a Lecturer of Ocean Engineering at the National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics.
  • Dr Abdussamie is currently the Course Coordinator of Ocean Engineering.
  • Dr Abdussamie’s primary research interests are the application of computational fluid dynamics techniques, experimental methods, machine learning tools and risk-based techniques for marine and offshore industries.

Biography

Dr Abdussamie has been a teaching/research member at the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania since 2013. Before that Dr Abdussamie was a marine surveyor with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) which is one of the world’s leading classification organisations. His industry experience with ABS on several new building and operational projects of both ships and offshore structures has enabled him to effectively build his research portfolio and teaching philosophy. Research and teaching enable Dr Abdussamie to share his previous field experience with ocean engineering students in the classroom.

Expertise

Dr Abdussamie’s research work aims to improve current engineering design approaches for both offshore oil and gas and marine renewable energy structures subjected to severe weather conditions through numerical modelling validated by experimental data. His key engineering expertise and interests include computational fluid dynamics and machine learning methods, high-performance computing, structural analysis, and risk-based techniques for marine and offshore industries. Over recent years his knowledge and commitment have enabled him to establish and develop his research themes in hydrodynamics, structures, and marine safety. Moreover, he has a strong continuing commitment in research as demonstrated by the number of papers that currently are under review in both international journals and conferences, and by his current supervision of HDR students as well as final year students.

Awards

  • In late 2012, Dr Abdussamie was awarded tuition and stipend scholarships by UTAS/AMC to enrol in the PhD programme and research into the field of the hydrodynamics of offshore structures in collaboration with the Australian Oil and Gas industry.
  • In Feb 2017, Dr Abdussamie was awarded Special Commendation for his doctoral research.
  • In April 2018, Dr Abdussamie has been awarded a certificate by Ocean Engineering Journal “Elsevier” due to his outstanding contribution in reviewing.
