Grants & Funding

Over the years, Natalia has engaged in multitude of projects, with overall institutional income of AUD 5 000 000 (equivalent). Grants were acquired from the European Union Framework Programs, the Japanese Ministry of Education and Research, Eurocontrol, Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T), International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), National Science Fund (Bulgaria), ERASMUS, ERASMUS+, etc. Currently she is working on two internal grants funded by CoSE in collaboration with colleagues from TIA, TED, and AMC.

Data fusion and machine learning for ship fuel efficiency analysis: a small but essential step towards green shipping through data analytics (2021 - 2022)$77,790
Description
This project is toDevelop a data fusion methodology that pre-processes voyage report data, sensor data, weather archive data, and AIS data and combines these four data sets in a systematic way;Develop some ship fuel efficiency models with machine learning approaches (piecewise linear/nonlinear regression, neural network, and random forest) that quantify the synergetic influence of sailing speed, displacement/draft, trim, sea conditions, and weather conditions on a ships daily bunker fuel consumption;Construct a computer (Python) code infrastructure for the above data fusion methodology and ship fuel efficiency models.

TEAM RESILIENCE: ENHANCING THEORY AND APPLICATION IN MARITIME EMERGENCY RESPONSE (2019)$4,500
Description
Maritime accident prevention and emergency response remain one of the most challengingareas for research and training despite efforts made by researchers, industry, regulatory bodies.Conventional approaches to emergency response training have shown sub-optimal outcomes inunexpected escalating emergencies.Based on their work with NASA, Alliger et al (2015) have noted that approaches involving teamresilience are "clearly essential" for optimising emergency responses. More recently, teamresilience has been identified as an approach that improves personnel performance andoutcomes in escalating situations (Stevens et al., 2015, Hollnagel, 2017). Both of these factorssupport an investigation into the value of using team resilience to enhance conventionalapproaches to maritime accident and emergency response both in theory and in practice.

Establish performance indicators for maritime education and training (PIMET) (2016 - 2017)$81,853
Description
The project aims to provide a benchmarking framework for maritime higher education institutions through the identification of performance indicators in the maritime sector. This will provide a mechanism for institutions to measure their performance relative to that of best practice institutions in individual performance areas such as research, training, internationalization and teaching.
