- Description
- The fourth Industrial revolution known as Industry 4.0 is transforming all industries including maritime. The application of Industry 4.0 in the maritime domain is radically transforming shipping technologies and practice through introduction of Shipping 4.0. Currently the maritime universities across the world are facing a major challenge in responding to maritime industries needs of providing them with the quality seafarers who are not only be competent to work on the ships of today but be prepared to operate the ships which need to be remotely controlled. The current project will investigate and test the application of MASS simulation technology for training future seafarers and provide all IAMU member universities with a pathway and a program to modify and use their existing simulation facilitates to equip themselves for the imminent future.

- Description
- The continual progression of Industry 4.0 adoption across industries has already begun impacting many facets of maritime transport and logistics. The digital transformation in shipping will result in an intelligent transport system (ITS) through a series of disruptive changes to ship design, operations, and manning that collectively aim to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Autonomous shipping as one aspect of the ITS in transportation is considered a potential solution for future challenges by utilising digital technologies on a large scale in the maritime domain. While there is growing research interest in these areas, examining the role of the human operators in the new smart shipping context is largely neglected and needs to be investigated. The utilisation of digital technologies will impact the human behaviour as an operator, including the changing role of seafarers on-board, the potential changes to their training and development of new capabilities, careers, and the strategies required to engage operators in their transition from traditional to autonomous shipping. This qualitative PhD project aims to explore the multi-dimensional impact of autonomous transportation technology resulting from the application of Industry 4.0 technologies on seafarers as a critical driver of ITS.
