Dr Zhi Leong serves as a Research Fellow at the Australian Maritime College. His research includes varied applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Experimental methods to investigate hydrodynamic challenges in Maritime Engineering, with a special interest in underwater vehicles.

Publications

Leong had published a number of papers, with the primary theme being the interaction effects between underwater vehicles and the CFD simulations and captive model experiments employed to investigate the interaction effects. He has also joint papers with other researchers investigating the behaviour of scour around subsea pipelines.

Transitional Stability of Maritime Platforms (2019 - 2022)$110,000
Description
The current standard means for conducting surfacing calculations of underwater vehicles is to utilise a pseudo static approach by which the stability can be approximated under calm water conditions with certain simplifying assumptions relating to drain down rates and blow down/pumping rates of water ballast, which may not reflect the true dynamics of the process. Such an approach provides for a time history of changing BG/GM throughout the diving evolution, which can be checked against certain criteria. Whilst static stability is expected to remain positive throughout a normal surfacing evolution, stability can be lost for significant time periods during emergency surfacing as rise rates can be much higher resulting in higher levels of entrained water in free flooding compartments. Negative static stability that is restored in short enough duration to avoid rolling to greater than 20 degrees is acceptable by the applied standard. Due to the dynamics of an underwater vehicle rising through water, and the dynamic changes of BG/GM throughout the surfacing evolution, the roll angle it achieves cannot be easily calculated, thus requiring more complicated procedures not readily available. The project aims to investigate transitional stability of a surfacing underwater vehicle and to develop a modelling capability ranging from a relevant simplified analysis to complex simulations in order to predict the stability of a surfacing underwater vehicle and ensure it is adequately addressed. This will include the draining requirements and optimising towards a hydrodynamic form that reduces noise sources due to openings in flooding compartments. This research may be extended lo included rough weather conditions more conducive to high roll angles.

Description
The project will focus on developing Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations to predict the hydrodynamic coefficients and the hydrodynamic and seakeeping behaviour of an underwater maritime platform under a range of conditions and configurations. This will include bare and appended hull forms, deep, near surface, and on surface operations, manoeuvres, and appendages. These simulation models are to be validated and supplemented through captive scaled model experiments conducted in AMCs towing tank and/or the model test basin using the DST Group Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism (HPMM) and specialised balances located in Launceston, Tasmania.
