Georgia Lindsay is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Tasmania. Her research focuses on the human experience of architecture with a special interest in museums and other cultural buildings. She uses these building types to understand issues iconic architecture and how to communicate sustainability.


Before joining the University of Tasmania, Georgia was a faculty member at the Program in Environmental Design at the University of Colorado Boulder (USA) from 2012-2019. There, she founded the ENVD Honors Program in addition to teaching classes on history, human behaviour, housing, and studios. During this time, she also founded Lindsay Design Research, a small consulting firm that helped industry partners understand the social side of design through pre- and post- occupancy assessments. She studied at the University of California Berkeley (USA) from 2007-2013, earning her PhD in Architecture there in December 2013.

Administrative expertise

Georgia is the Academic Integrity Adviser for Architecture & Design and Geography, Planning & Spatial Sciences. Before coming to the University of Tasmania, Georgia established Lindsay Design Research, a consulting practice that helped firms with pre- and post-occupancy research. She was also founding Director of the Environmental Design Honors Program at the University of Colorado Boulder.


Teaching expertise

Georgia has taught courses in Human Behaviour, Architecture History, Architecture Theory, Housing Policies, Research Methods, Research Communication, and studio courses in Architecture and Design. She has supervised over twenty honours research projects.

Georgia’s research emphasises the human side of design, including pre-occupancy analysis and programming, use and behaviour-focused post-occupancy evaluation, and studying the meaning and effects of architecture. Often, she uses museums and other cultural buildings as lenses through which to understand how architecture is used by institutions and cities to communicate values, especially values of sustainability, and to brand places.

Research Themes

Georgia’s research aligns to the University’s themes of ‘Creativity, Culture and Society’ and ‘Environment Resources and Sustainability’. She frequently uses museum architecture as a lens through which to understand how architecture operates as a social field. Specifically, she has three main areas of study:

  1. The user perspective in architecture. By defining ‘users’ of architecture broadly, Georgia is able to study a wide variety of issues relating to the functions and meanings of architecture and urban design. Using methods drawn from the social sciences, this research highlights stakeholder and community needs, human responses to the built environment, and the social functions fulfilled by architecture and urban design. She has three books highlighting this topic.
  2. Architecture and city branding. As regional cities compete increasingly on a global stage for resources and tourism, architecture is enrolled in the project of defining places as creative cities. Georgia’s work in this area articulates the mechanisms of the place/building relationship.
  3. Communicating sustainability. Green buildings, including LEED or Green Star certified buildings, offer a unique opportunity for institutions to educate the public about building science and to promote values of sustainability to the visiting public. With scholars of Teaching Green Buildings at the University of Missouri (USA), this project outlines what strategies institutions use to communicate about architecture and sustainability. Cultural institutions have the power to lead the public towards more sustainable practices, and this research helps clearly define possibilities for communicating effectively


Georgia is currently collaborating on two different projects internationally.

With researchers at the University of Missouri (USA), she is working on research that explores how museums use green certifications as part of their exhibitionary practice to educate the public about sustainability.

With researchers at the Technical University of Munich (Germany), she is collaborating on a Special Issue of European Planning Studies highlighting the role Star Architecture plays in transforming cities.

Georgia is author of The User Perspective on Twenty-First-Century Art Museums (Routledge 2016), editor of Contemporary Museum Architecture and Design: Theory and Practice of Place (Routledge 2020), and co-editor with Lusi Morhayim of Revisiting “Social Factors:” Advancing Research into People and Place (Cambridge Scholars Publishing 2015). In addition to publishing books, she has authored and co-authored multiple journal articles, and regularly acts as a reviewer for journals and book manuscripts.
