Biography

Svenja Kratz is a contemporary Australian artist and researcher interested in transdisciplinary creative practice, particularly the intersections between science and art.  From 2008 – 2012, she worked in the area of cell and tissue culture at the Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT) Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI). During this time, she produced three major bodies of work that mapped her engagement with contemporary biotechnologies including primary culture of human and fetal calf cells, tissue and genetic engineering.  These projects include: The Absence of Alice – a series of mixed media exhibitions originally inspired by the artist’s engagement with the Saos-2 bone cancer cell line, The Immortalisation of Kira and Rama – a living bioart display incorporating fetal calf cells and The Human Skin Experience/Equivalent Project – a jewellery project involving tissue engineering practices.

Since 2012, Svenja has continued to develop her practice and has collaborated with artists, designers, musicians and scientists on the development of new works across bioengineering, new media and fine art. She graduated with a PhD in Biotechnology and Contemporary Art from QUT in 2014 and has exhibited her works at a range of national and international venues including The Sydney Powerhouse Museum in 2013, Experimenta Recharge touring Australia from 2015 – 2016 and The Science Gallery, London in 2019.  Svenja Kratz is based in Hobart, Tasmania and works as a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Creative Practice at the University of Tasmania.  Svenja has expertise in mixed media, video and sculptural works and teaches core art-theory units within the Fine Arts discipline.

Posthuman Genetic Legacies (2021)$21,100
Description
Posthuman Genetic Legacies is a practice-led research project that investigates avenues of producing an alternative (non-human) andongoing genetic legacy via biotechnological intervention. The study draws on established practices in biological art to consider the feminist potential of cell culture and genetic engineering technologies to acquire biological offspring when conventional reproductive pathways are compromised or traditional conceptions of motherhood are undesirable. The project also aims to test the proposition that posthuman and new materialist philosophies, that disrupt binary categorisation and a human centred perspective, may offer a conceptual space for rethinking the anguish of situational childlessness. Through a range of boundary-challenging artistic examinations, existing regulatory and ethical issues will be examined to highlight the legal frameworks that govern access to reproductive technologies as well as ownership, use and patenting of biological material.

STEAM HORIZONS: Engagement and Alignment through Interdisciplinary Education (2017)$11,148
Description
Tasmania has significant socio-economic challenges, with the lowest level of educational attainment in Australia. Tasmania has experienced persistent underperformance in the transition to Year 10 and subsequent retention rates to Year 12 (Stratford, Field, Oliver and Ambrose, 2016, p. 4). It is estimated that Tasmania is 10,000 tertiary enrolments behind the next lowest performing state, with significant challenges in encouraging students to complete Years 11 and 12 (in 2011 the retention rate for Year 12 was 78.2%, compared with 84.1% nationally [http://www.dpac.tas.gov.au/divisions/csr/]). At the same time, Tasmania is host to arguably the most vibrant interdisciplinary creative community in the country, as exemplified by exhibition, festival and community projects supported through MONA (including 24 Carrot Gardens) and other island-based creative and education industries (such as Bitlink); and, outstanding examples of secondary school STEAM education across the state (Newstead College, Launceston; Rosny College, Hobart). These resonate with UTAS initiatives such as the Collab Lab (Makers Workshop, Burnie); A Lab (Melville Street, Hobart); the major new infrastructure development represented by the Hedberg (Hobart); the Creative Exchange Institute (CXI); and, the overarching goals of the Peter Underwood Centre.STEAM can be broadly defined as including the arts, here creative arts, in the delivery of traditional STEM disciplines. STEAM Horizons: Engagement and attainment through interdisciplinary education will explore models for STEAM education in secondary education in Tasmania, and resulting pathways into tertiary education. It will address the questions: what forms of educational design supportsuccessful (interdisciplinary) STEAM education; and, how can educational attainment be enabled through STEAM pathways?The project will directly build upon the successful Office of Learning & Teaching Innovation & Development grant Benchmarking quality assessment tasks to facilitate interdisciplinary learning in the creative arts and humanities (2014-6; AUS$199,000) on which Wise was a CI (previously Lead Researcher), supported by Dr Wendy Fountain, to extend the application of those findings into secondary education, wider disciplinary networks, as well as the specific interdisciplinary field of STEAM education.

The Deeper Meaning of Embodiment for Knowledge Creation at UTAS (2016)$6,978
Description
Along with colleagues from across the disciplinary spectrum we want to develop a sound understanding of:1. The different meanings and manifestations of embodiment within different disciplines2. How being embodied affects the way we do research (e.g., being in a place vs communication over a distance; conducting research in harsh environments)3. How embodiment helps us understand links between our research and the subject matters that we look at (e.g., understanding music or literature as both abstract concepts and embodied experiences of 'doing'; 'doing' maths being grounded in embodiment (eg Lakoff and Nunez 2000) as is aesthetics applied when evaluating a proof.
