Dorothy Steane
Adjunct Senior Researcher
Room 421 , Life Sciences Building
Dr Dorothy Steane is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences. Her current research program focuses on population genetics, phylogeny, evolution, adaptation and biogeography of Eucalyptus. Dorothy also participates in numerous collaborative research projects that address taxonomic or evolutionary questions in other plant groups including Casuarinaceae, Clerodendrum (Lamiaceae), Dracophyllum (Ericaceae), Correa (Rutaceae) and Pterostylis (Orchidaceae).
Biography
Although physically based at the University of Tasmania, Dorothy has held research positions with many partner organisations: three forestry-related Cooperative Research Centres, an NCCARF funded project in collaboration with CSIRO and National Parks and Wildlife (WA), and a Senior Research Fellowship with the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Research Themes
Dorothy's research into genetic adaptation, phylogeny and evolution aligns with the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Information derived from genomic approaches to phylogeny are being used in conjunction with morphological data to improve the classification of Australia's iconic eucalypts. Adaptation research provides data that underpin practical strategies to assist environmental managers to future-proof ecological restoration projects.
Collaboration
Dorothy is currently involved in a collaborative project on adaptation to aridity in eucalypts with National Parks and Wildlife (WA), CSIRO Land and Water flagship (WA) and Edith Cowen University (WA); this research also links into the Australian Transect Network. In 2012-2014, Dorothy collaborated with researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (QLD) on projects relating to the genomic adaptation of Corymbia to aridity. Through her membership of EUCAGEN, she was involved with the international effort to sequence the complete genome of Eucalyptus grandis. She was a key player in the ARC Environmental Futures Network (2006-2008) and is involved with the Australian Transect Network.

Projects
- Description
- This project aims to develop a tool to generate guidelines for the site-specific translocation of seed used for forest regeneration. Seed translocation is an increasingly important topic as seed from local areas may not be adapted to future climates and therefore may suffer from reduced productivity and health in the future. The use of seed from non-local areas may mitigate some of these negative factors. However, to identify where to source seed is a complex task This study will use genetic sequencing and climate modelling to predict seed source locations which will be adapted to future climates for a given revegetation site. We will focus on Eucalyptus obliqua, a key species in the Tasmanian native timber industry for which ensuring future productivity and health is a key concern.

- Description
- We will use the white-gum complex (Eucalyptus viminalis, E. rubida, E. dalrympleana) to better understand the genetic potential of eucalypt populations to adapt to environmental change. Integrating glasshouse and field studies with genomics, quantitative genetics, physiology and environmental modelling, we aim to understand the extent to which:i.populations have historically adapted to local environments, ii.natural selection is currently modifying native and planted forests, andiii.genetic introgression has enabled occupancy of marginal environments.

- Description
- The rate of climate change is exceeding worst-case scenarios. We urgently need validated, rapid and pragmaticsolutions to managing plant and animal maladaptation caused by this global environmental change. UsingAustralias iconic blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus), we will test strategies for identifying the major climaticpredictors of, and key genomic regions that underlie, adaptation to climate change. By integrating climatevariables and genome sequences with field trial-derived trait and performance data from decades of research andthousands of trees, we will develop validated DNA-based tools for monitoring the rate of adaptation in our nativeforests and identifying climate-ready seed sources for environmental and industrial plantings.

- Description
- We will use DArTseq markers to genotype ca. 280 samples of E. pauciflora from 37 populations from across the native range inTasmania. The resulting database will build on existing SSR, cpDNA and functional trait databases that will be combined to conduct studies on the genetic basis of adaptation to climate. Such studies will feed into seed sourcing guidelines for ecological restoration.

- The USC Research Futures Project is an integrated package of initiatives that will drive increased quantity and quality in USCs research effort. It has two key elements:1. Realising collaboration with strategic research partners.2. Increasing USCs internal research collaboration capacity. The research partners were strategically selected for their leadership in research areasaligned with USCs strengths (water, sustainability, forests, aquaculture), researchdevelopment strategies and their track record for successful collaboration. These partnersare: Griffith University, including the University of Queensland via the Australian Waterand Environmental Research Alliance. University of Tasmania. - Description
- Recent advances in genetic technology in eucalypts provide a unique opportunity to lead critical international research in population-level adaptation to climate change. Widespread species that span aridity gradients may provide the genetic potential required to maximise survival of commercial and restoration plantings. We will use genome scans to identify adaptive markets in populations of a Queensland eucalypt species, Corymbia variegata, across an aridity gradient. This twelve month project will provide tools for monitoring adaptive changes in Australia's forests and inform environmental planning into the future.
