Jules Freeman
Adjunct Researcher
Room 421 , Life Sciences Building
Dr Jules Freeman is a post-doctoral research fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Tasmania, Australia. Jules works in the eucalypt genetics group, specialising in molecular genetics. In particular, the application of molecular techniques to study population genetics, biogeography, and genomics. At present much of his work focuses on capitalising on the recently released eucalypt genome sequence to gain new insight into genome organisation and evolution, comparative genomics, the role of meiotic recombination in eucalypt evolution, as well as the genetic basis of phenotypic variation.
Biography
Jules completed his PhD at UTAS in 2007. Since then he has worked as a postdoc based at UTAS, including consultancy work for the Tasmanian Government, working at the French National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) and joint employment by the University of the Sunshine Coast from 2012-2014.

Research Themes
Jules' research fits within the University's theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Understanding the genomic basis of variation in complex traits, how this variation is distributed in nature and its adaptive significance, has potential implications both for the conservation of natural forests as well as sustainable plantation forestry.
Collaboration
Jules is involved in collaborative projects in three main areas of research: Eucalypt recombination; Resistance to Myrtle rust; and Corymbia genomics. These projects involve collaboration with world leaders in their field, located throughout Australia as well as France, South Africa and Brazil.
Current projects
- Eucalypt recombination - examines variation in meiotic recombination rate within and between species in eucalypt, using comparison of linkage maps with genome sequences as well linkage disequilibrium approaches.
- Resistance to Myrtle rust - examines the variation in resistance to myrtle rust across all Tasmanian eucalypts. We are also conducting quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies to dissect the genetic basis of disease resistance in Eucalyptus globulus and Corymbia species as well as collaborating in complimentary Association genetic studies.
- Corymbia genomics - We are constructing high density genetic linkage maps which will be used to aid assembly of Corymbia genome sequences and for detailed comparative genomic studies between Corymbia and Eucalyptus species.

- Period
- 2021 - 2023
- Description
- This project will use genetics, remote sensing and artificial intelligence to develop new ways of phenotyping forest trees, with high precision at unprecedented scales. These approaches will be applied to better understand how different genetic material performs in different environments, allowing us to better face the huge uncertainties in establishing and management of future forests in the face of climate change. This project will be lead from Scion (New Zealand Forest Research Ltd.). UTAS will collaborate on part of the project utilising Prof Brodribb's expertise in directly phenotyping drought stress, and Dr Freeman's experience in forest genetics, to ground truth remote sensing data.

- Description
- This project will model the impacts of forestry management practices on the composition and succession of soil microbial communities, and investigate their links with regenerating plant communities. The soil microbiome and plant community will be sampled across a logging and burning severity gradient at four points in time. By extracting soil DNA and sequencing the 16SrRNA and ITS regions, the biodiversity of the bacterial and fungal communities can be characterised. This project will focus on important taxa involved in symbiotic and pathogenic relationships with plants, and free-living taxa that are responsible for the availability of essential plant nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous.

- Description
- The USC Research Futures Project is an integrated package of initiatives that will drive increased quantity and quality in USC's research effort. It has two key elements:1. Realising collaboration with strategic research partners.2. Increasing USC's internal research collaboration capacity. The research partners were strategically selected for their leadership in research areasaligned with USC's strengths (water, sustainability, forests, aquaculture), researchdevelopment strategies and their track record for successful collaboration. These partnersare:* Griffith University, including the University of Queensland via the Australian Waterand Environmental Research Alliance.* University of Tasmania.* Queensland University of Technology.

- Description
- Myrtle rust has recently entered Australia, posing a serious threat to our (myrtaceous) flora including major species from the genera Eucalptus and Corymbia. There is an urgent need to understand how tolerant our vegetation is to the disease in order to better predict its economic and environmental effects. Using quantitative genetic approaches, we aim to elucidate the genetic basis of tolerance in Eucalyptus and Corymbia and compare it with tolerance to native pathogens. This one year project will produce publications and build collaborative links, providing the foundation for further research in comparative genetics/genomics.
