Valerie Hecht
Research Fellow
Room 429 , Life Sciences Building
Valerie Hecht is a research academic in the School of Biological Sciences. Her main interests focus around the molecular mechanisms controlling plant development, including plant molecular biology, genetics and development from embryogenesis to flowering. Nowadays she mainly works in flowering in legume species (pea, lentil, chickpea, medicago).
Biography
Valerie obtained her PhD at the University of Perpignan (France) in 1996, cloning genes involved in Arabidopsis early embryogenesis. She then went to Wageningen University (The Netherlands) from 1996 to 2001, as a postdoctoral researcher still working on Arabidopsis embryogenesis. In 2002 she moved to Tasmania and started working on genes regulating flowering in legumes (pea, lentil, chickpea, medicago) in the group of Dr Jim Weller.

- Plant molecular biology
- Plant genetics
- Plant genomics
- Legume functional genomics
- Molecular mechanisms controlling plant development
Research Themes
Valerie's research mainly aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Her work is part of the research activities from Dr Jim Weller's group and investigates the genes and mechanisms that underlie flowering time variation, and their broader relevance for plant growth and productivity. Flowering in many plant species is strongly influenced by light, day length and temperature. The way in which plants sense and respond to these factors is being studied using garden pea as a model system. Mutants affecting flowering responses are being characterized, and legume homologues of Arabidopsis flowering genes are being mapped and used in expression studies.
Collaboration
Current research in the group involves numerous international collaborations on legume biology, genetics and genomics, with research groups in New-Zealand, Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.
