- Forest improvement
Research Themes
Professor Reid has used a multidisciplinary research approach since the 1970s. This began with the use of a genetic approach to tackle intractable issues in plant development. It required the use of an analytical chemistry approach to study plant hormone synthesis and, more recently, a range of molecular techniques to understand the regulation of plant development including shoot elongation, flowering and seed development. Has also worked extensively on forestry issues and eucalypt genetics as Director of two Forestry CRCs. Most recently he has used an ARC grant to determine the regulation of plant/microbe interactions and the role of plant hormones in the communication between plants and soil micro-organisms.
Professor Reid's expertise on plant developmental genetics is demonstrated by his listing as an ICI Highly Cited Researcher in 2001 and a current h-index of 53 and over 9,000 citations.
Collaboration
Professor Reid has extensive international collaborations with universities and research organistions in the USA, the UK and Japan.

- Description
- Soil microbes can give plants access to previously unavailable but essential nutrients through symbioses. Legumes are unique as they form symbioses with both nitrogen-fixing bacteria and with mycorrhizal fungi that supply nutrients such as phosphate. This project will investigate the role of the plant hormones (small, mobile, potent growth regulators) in the formation of these symbiotic relationships across legume genera. An insight into the common and divergent roles of hormones in these symbioses is essential to provide researchers and breeders with new tools to maximise nutrient acquisition by legumes, important crops contributing an estimated A$1 billion/y to the Australian economy.

- Description
- To manipulate plant development and architecture to meet environmental and agronomic changes, we urgently need to understand how plant hormones act and interact to shape the plant. This project expands a world-class collection of hormone-related mutants in pea to dissect the regulatory mechanisms that control plant growth. It focuses on the growth-promoting hormones auxin, gibberellin and brassinosteroids, and their interactions with the new branching hormone, strigolactone, and with the growth-inhibiting hormones abscisic acid and ethylene.

- Description
- This project will use a molecular genetic approach in garden pea and the related model legume Medicago truncatula to investigate the roles of photoreceptors in developmental responses to light. It will define gene families encoding key components of light signal transduction and identify new photoreceptor and light signalling mutants by forward and reverse genetics. The mutants will be used in molecular, physiological and biochemical studies to examine how photoreceptors control and coordinate development throughout the plant through effects on plant hormone synthesis and response. This project will improve our understanding of how plants perceive and respond to their natural light environment, thus addressing key agronomic issues.
