Professor Vaillancourt is a Professor of Plant Genetics. His specialty is using DNA based tools to better understand plant species. He has worked on hundreds of species, but focuses on the eucalypts, with major contributions towards their conservation, understanding their evolution, mating system, genomic architecture and the genetic control of complex traits that are important to their adaptation and utilisation.  He is firmly dedicated to training the next generation of researcher and has graduated 24 students with PhDs, 2 MScs and 37 with Honours so far while at UTAS.

Biography

After completing his PhD in lentil genetics, René worked as an extension specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture (Canada) on specialty crop agronomy and did a three year postdoc at Cornell University (USA) completing the first population and phylogenetic studies of cowpeas (Vigna) using DNA tools.  After coming to the University of Tasmania he started teaching genetics, oversaw the establishment of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory in 1995 and contributed significantly to the genomic resources available in eucalypts through DNA marker development and recently genome sequencing projects.

René has a growing interest in genomics, a sub-discipline at the forefront of genetic research.  Utilising genomic tools to better understand eucalypt evolution and the genetic control of complex traits has been a focus of his research recently.  He specializes in the genetics of Eucalyptus globulus, which is Australia's main plantation eucalypt, also widely planted in temperate parts of the world and is an important native tree of Tasmania and southeastern Australia. The extensive resources and knowledge he has helped develop, provide a unique framework to underpin the future development of this economically and ecologically important species.

Research Themes

René's research aligns to the university's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability.  His research is sometimes classed as basic research (some questions on genome architecture and evolution), but he like his research to 'make a difference', be useful to industry or society, e.g. an example of the later is a recent focus on genetic research that can support the restoration of degraded lands and provide answers on what to plant in view of climate change.

Collaboration

Prof. Vaillancourt has ongoing collaborations with scientists in France, Brazil, South Africa, Malaysia and Vietnam in tree genomics.  He has collaborations with scientists in CSIRO, the Science and Conservation Division (Department of Parks and Wildlife in WA), and the Universities of Melbourne, Southern Cross, and Queensland.  In Tasmania he collaborates with scientists in Greening Australia, Forico, Forestry Tasmania and DPIPWE, but most importantly he collaborates with many scientists that are part of the eucalypt genetic group (Brad Potts, Dorothy Steane, Jules Freeman, Rebecca Jones, Matt Larcombe), other plant scientists in the School of Biological Sciences (Greg Jordan, Jim Reid, Mark Hunt, Robert Wiltshire, Jim Weller, Valerie Hecht) and scientists in other parts of the University (CSL, Mathematics, School of Land and Food).

Forest Growers Research Program (2021 - 2025)$817,874
Description
The University of Tasmania (UTas) is committed to supporting the forest industries through research as evidenced by the long history of successful, collaborative research with national and state-based forest industries partners and as articulated in the current University and College of Sciences and Engineering strategic documents. Close working relationships between PhD students and industry partners during a student's research candidature ensures projects are industry focused, students are trained to be industry ready, and outcomes and results are translated to partners during the course of the projects; creating an excellent shared-learning environment. This builds capacity in the sector and continues to ensure that the growth and productivity of the forest industries is based on proactive practices and finding innovative solutions to current and future challenges.Through on-going conversations between UTas and the Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) Grower Research Advisory Committee (GRAC) since August 2020, a direct co-funding model to support a Forest Growers Research Program of six PhD scholarships, project costs and a technical salary has been developed.

Survival of the drought tolerant: do eucalypts have the genetic potential to adapt to a hotter, drier Australia? (2020 - 2022)$446,000
Description
We will use the white-gum complex (Eucalyptus viminalis, E. rubida, E. dalrympleana) to better understand the genetic potential of eucalypt populations to adapt to environmental change. Integrating glasshouse and field studies with genomics, quantitative genetics, physiology and environmental modelling, we aim to understand the extent to which:i.populations have historically adapted to local environments, ii.natural selection is currently modifying native and planted forests, andiii.genetic introgression has enabled occupancy of marginal environments.

The genomics of climate adaptation in eucalypts (2019 - 2021)$475,000
Description
The rate of climate change is exceeding worst-case scenarios. We urgently need validated, rapid and pragmaticsolutions to managing plant and animal maladaptation caused by this global environmental change. UsingAustralia's iconic blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus), we will test strategies for identifying the major climaticpredictors of, and key genomic regions that underlie, adaptation to climate change. By integrating climatevariables and genome sequences with field trial-derived trait and performance data from decades of research andthousands of trees, we will develop validated DNA-based tools for monitoring the rate of adaptation in our nativeforests and identifying climate-ready seed sources for environmental and industrial plantings.

Genetic factors impacting the production of medical-grade honey within Tasmanian Leptospermum (2018 - 2022)$70,500
Description
The overall aim of this proposed PhD research plan is to study the genetic control and variability of key traits which impact on the production of medical-grade honey within four Tasmanian Leptospermum species, with a main focus on L. scoparium. This will include developing an understanding of key traits such as plant survival, growth, flower production, flowering time, DHA levels, and total nectar sugars. The results of the PhD will identify ongoing research requirements within this field and assist in developing the knowledge base that will be useful for the establishment of productive high-value medical honey.

Fingerprinting for quality control and to optimise deployment decisions in Eucalyptus dunnii (2015)$5,123
Description
This project aims to improve the productivity and quality of seedEnergy customers plantations by supplying superior seed for deployment. This will be achieved by increasing both the accuracy of selection and the intensity of selection of the orchard trees that are used to supply seed for establishing plantations. seedEnergy is currently undertaking a major genetic evaluation project with the aim of producing reliable estimates of deployment (genetic) worth for its seed orchard trees. Customers have the option of purchasing commercial quantities of seed harvested from specific orchard trees.

Follow-up on the investigation of diversity and breeding system of clove (Syzigium aromaticum) using microsatellite markers (2015)$7,000
Description
The University of Tasmania was contracted to identify a set of molecular markers (microsatellite) suitable for fingerprinting individual clove trees and so allowing us to ask questions about the genetic diversity within and between orchards which will improve ability to manage high quality seed production and assist with the clonal selection decisions. Part 1 of the research program on clove (the development of the microsatellite) has been successfully completed and a report submitted. In part 2 of the research program we investigated genetic diversity and breeding system using samples collected in Indonesia from various seed orchards. Unfortunately, it turned-out that quite a few progenies could not be matched to their 'purported' maternal tree. In this follow-up study we will fingerprint some of the same samples (96 samples) that are being re-collected, in order to find-out what is the source of the disagreement between parent and progeny.

The role of recombination in eucalypt evolution (2014 - 2016)$318,000
Description
Meiotic recombination is a key source of the genetic variation upon which evolution thrives. This project exploits new genomic resources to provide the first detailed study of recombination in Australia's iconic eucalypts and clarify its evolutionary role. In particular, it examines: variation in the rate of recombination along the eleven eucalypt chromosomes, and determine genome features which are associated with 'hotspots' and 'coldspots' of recombination; the patterns of variation in recombination rates between species, genotypes, sexes and chromosomes; and whether the environment and population history affect recombination and thus evolvability of natural populations.

Mobility, Stasis or Extinction? The Response of Plants to Long-Term Environmental Change (2012 - 2014)$285,000
Description
Given the potential for extensive extinction and environmental degradation in response to projected climate change, there is a compelling need to be able to predict the ability of plant species to survive these changes. At present, predictions of species' responses to climate change are largely based on current distributions of species. However, DNA and fossil evidence show such predictions are often erroneous. Using studies of DNA and past climates this projects aims to interpret the genetic signatures left by past climate change in the gene pools of Australian plants and identify biological factors that can be used in improved models of evidence-based ecosystem management.

Providing a genetic framework to enhance the success and benefits from forest restoration and carbon plantings in rural landscapes (2012 - 2015)$680,000
Description
This project provides a genetic framework to guide forest restoration and carbon plantings in Australia and inform strategies for climate change adaptation. A network of genetic trials, integrated into large-scale environmental tree plantings will be used to study the genetic diversity and adaptive potential of native tree species. Using planted seedlings and direct sowing trials of two eucalypt species the project assesses the effect of multiple scales of tree genetic diversity (species, provenance, families) on performance across different sites, species mixtures and levels of structural complexity. It also assesses local versus non-local seed sources and the role of tree genetics in shaping dependent biodiversity and other ecosystem services.

Genetics of eucalypt disease tolerance (2012)$20,000
Description
Myrtle rust has recently entered Australia, posing a serious threat to our (myrtaceous) flora including major species from the genera Eucalptus and Corymbia. There is an urgent need to understand how tolerant our vegetation is to the disease in order to better predict its economic and environmental effects. Using quantitative genetic approaches, we aim to elucidate the genetic basis of tolerance in Eucalyptus and Corymbia and compare it with tolerance to native pathogens. This one year project will produce publications and build collaborative links, providing the foundation for further research in comparative genetics/genomics.

The Genetics of Adaptation: Changing Developmental Trajectories of Eucalypts (2011 - 2013)$285,000
Description
This project aims to discover the genes and alleles controlling the timing of the distinctive and often rapid transition from juvenile to adult leaf types that occurs during the life of many of the 700+ species of Eucalyptus in Australia. Variation in the timing of developmental events such as vegetative and reproductive phase change is believed to have played a key role in both animal and plant evolution, including eucalypts. The project will determine the role of these phase change genes in adaptation and species divergence in eucalypts and provide new insights into the control of maturation processes in trees.
