Jason A Smith
Associate Professor
Room 204 , Chemistry Building
Dr Jason A Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and carries out research in the area of Organic Chemistry, designing and synthesising new molecules for Drug Discovery. He studies the role of organic molecules in living systems, such as determining the role of plant hormones in plant health and crop yield. Organic Chemistry plays a major role in improving society by developing new drugs to combat disease and understanding chemical processes of plants to improve food security.
Biography
Jason is a graduate of Flinders University of South Australia where he obtained both his BSc (Hons) and PhD. He has carried out post-doctoral research at Texas A&M (with Nobel Laureate Prof Sir Derek HR Barton) and at Australian National University (Prof Martin Banwell). In 1999 he received an AMRAD postdoctoral award and the RACI Athel Beckwith Lectureship in 2005.

Expertise
Jason's research activities focus on the development of new synthetic methodology and its application to the synthesis of biologically active or structurally complex molecules. This includes exploiting pyrrole as a molecular template for the rapid construction of alkaloids. Other research areas involve the development of new methods for carrying out demanding organic transformations, the determination of organic reaction mechanisms, applications in biosynthesis and the synthesis of potential drug candidates for particular diseases. A recent development in our laboratories has been the development of pressured hot water extraction (PHWE) for natural product isolation. Jason also has an active research program on the synthesis and roles of plant hormones.

- Description
- Food and wood products are areas of strategic growth for Tasmania and regional Australia, contributing $1.6 billion and $615 million, respectively, to the annual Tasmanian economy. A thriving and sustainable sector requires continued innovation to locally value-add and diversify products and markets. Innovation is underpinned by research strengths and a workforce sector connected to advances in technology and trained graduates. The University of Tasmania (UTas) is committed, through its strategic plan, to deliver impactful research to help Tasmania prosper, and to have influence nationally and globally. Through collaborations, this three-year project will increase research and development activity at UTas to support value-adding in niche food and wood products in regional areas. The delivery of the project will build cross-disciplinary, integrated collaborations at UTas, and together with long-term external partnerships and collaborations, will maximise the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches to delivering impactful research for the regions

- Description
- Cannabis and cannabis extracts have been reported to have beneficial applications to many indications including the management of seizures, pain, cancer and appetite amongst others. One problem has been the illicit nature of the material which results in lack of control of the dose and chemical profile of material which can be due to different plant varieties, growing conditions, extraction preparation and mode of delivery. This project aims to adopt a drug discovery approach to provide solid evidence for the effect of different cannabinoids by isolating the individual components for thorough evaluation of any therapeutical applications. In this way, clear dose dependant activity can be studied and protocols for the prescription of cannabinoids can be developed that are in-line with modern pharmaceutical procedures. This will also be the start point for the development of novel semi-synthetic cannabinoids that will allow us to develop structure activity relationships for different indications. This potentially extends the scope of the medicinal cannabis industry to be a raw material for the synthesis of active non-natural derivates similar to the semi-synthetic opiates.

- The proposal aims to incorporate enhanced robotic liquid handling capability into the workflow of CompoundsAustralia to further accelerate world-class research towards bioactive compound discovery. Compounds Australiaconnects Australias chemists with the global bioscience research community by making available the nationalcompound collection (>670,000 compounds) in assay-ready formats. The requested equipment will support anetwork of 38 research groups from 22 organisations (academic, not-for-profit and industry), across five states. The research projects we aim to support with this equipment are diverse, but share a common emphasis on novelbioactive compound discovery to advance the understanding of complex biological phenomena.

- Description
- Soil microbes can give plants access to previously unavailable but essential nutrients through symbioses. Legumes are unique as they form symbioses with both nitrogen-fixing bacteria and with mycorrhizal fungi that supply nutrients such as phosphate. This project will investigate the role of the plant hormones (small, mobile, potent growth regulators) in the formation of these symbiotic relationships across legume genera. An insight into the common and divergent roles of hormones in these symbioses is essential to provide researchers and breeders with new tools to maximise nutrient acquisition by legumes, important crops contributing an estimated A$1 billion/y to the Australian economy.
