Fernando Maya is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the School of Natural Sciences. He is interested in the development of novel materials and their application as supports for chemical separation.

Biography

Fernando completed his MSc (2007) and PhD in Chemistry (2011) from University of the Balearic Islands (UIB, Spain). He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct postdoctoral research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA, 2012-2013), followed by a postdoctoral research/adjunct lecturer position at the UIB (2014-2018). He was appointed as a Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Tasmania in July 2018 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in July 2020. He is an academic member of the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS).

Research Themes

Fernando’ s research aligns to the research themes of the Australian Centre for research on Separation Science (ACROSS). His research interests include the synthesis of porous polymers and hybrid materials, the development of supports for extraction and separation based on 3D printing, and the design of novel methodologies for analytical sample preparation. Combining advanced materials and novel manufacturing techniques we plan to develop unprecedented approaches for chemical separation, enabling highly selective chemical separations of complex mixtures, or the detection of biologically/environmentally relevant molecules at very low levels.

two portable capillary electrophoresis prototype systems already developed will be replicated and deployed in collaboration with Syrinx and Southern Waste Solutions (SWS). Mobile soil water extraction for biological and chemical analysis (2020 - 2023)$110,000
Description
NOTE: This is funding for a Phd Scholarship, that will be administered within the existing CRC Soil : Smart Soil Sensors project.NOTE: Th funding has already been granted by the Soil CRC: UTAS/TIA will provide 50% stipend. The other 50% and operating will be provided by the SOIL CRC.Growers need a fast, reliable paddock based means to measure soil NPK in order to manage fertilizer application in a timely, spatially cognisant, and efficient manner. Current soil testing is too slow and too expensive for either precision fertilizer management or reactive fertilizer management. This project will prototype a mobile device for the extraction of soil water for microbial and chemical analysis . The device will be able to extract soil water from both moist and wet soils, which when coupled with Lab on a Chip analysis will report the true availability of nutrients that plants are able to extract from the soil.

This project aims to develop tools that will assist land managers better manage nutrient inputs targeted to meet crop requirements. Throughout this project, an affordable field-based tool kit will be developed to obtain real-time analytical information about the determination of soil chemical properties, in a simple and cost-effective way.

Research Supervision

Fernando is currently the primary supervisor of 4 PhD students and 2 MSc students. He is involved in the co-supervision of several PhD students at the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS), Chemistry (UTAS) and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA). He has successfully supervised/co-supervised 3 PhD students, 4 MSc students, 2 Honours students, and 4 BSc thesis to completion at the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain) and the University of Tasmania.  He has supervised 1 visiting postdoc 8 visiting PhD student and 3 visiting MSc students from different countries.
