Dr Becky Fuller is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Natural Sciences. She is interested in the development of magnetic molecules and particles for a diverse range of applications.

Biography

Becky graduated from the University of Western Australia with a BSc(Hons) in 2002. She went on to complete a PhD (UWA 2010) in Synthetic Chemistry and Condensed Matter Physics under the guidance of Prof George Koutsantonis and Prof Robert Stamps. Following, she undertook postdoctoral research with Prof Mark Spackman, before being awarded an independent UWA Research Fellowship (2014-2018) in the Discipline of Chemistry. She then moved to Curtin University (2018-2019) to work as an ARC DECRA recipient in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences. Becky was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Tasmania in September 2019.

Research Themes

Becky’s research focuses on the development of new magnetic molecular materials. Specifically the multidiscipline projects focus on the synthesis of systematically varied systems and studying how their features affect the magnetic or catalytic properties of the materials. The systems produced have diverse applications including use as a contrast agent in medical imaging, information storage materials and catalysts for the oil and gas industry. These applications align with the better health and the environment, resources and sustainability themes.

Becky has secured funding for a variety of projects from the Australian Research Council, Industry, not for profit and internal institutional sources.

Some of these projects include: medical contrast agents (Cancer Council WA, Ada Bartholomew Trust, Breast Cancer Research Centre), oil and gas catalysis (WA:ERA ex-Chevron) and magnetic molecules (ARC DE180100112). She is currently working as an ARC DECRA recipient for the project entitled: “Design and synthesis of new radical and heterometallic magnetic molecules”.

Infrastructure funding-Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System to be housed at Uni Melb; replace aging infrastructure at Monash uni. Very specialised equipment, performs magnetic characterisation; New generation of instruments have liquid helium recovery and will not require extensive liquid helium cryogen top ups.

Research Supervision

I am committed to the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students Teaching the next generation of scientists through participation in the research laboratory is something that I enjoy. My philosophy in terms of supervision is to be as flexible as possible to adapt projects towards student interests and skills. I have successfully supervised both undergraduate and post graduate students at my previous institutions and look forward to the development of my research group at the University of Tasmania.
