Dr Karin Orth is an experienced teacher and researcher in the Discipline of Earth Sciences and CODES at the University of Tasmania. She teaches into all levels of Earth Sciences and enjoys the interaction with students. Her research interests encompass volcanoes, the rocks they form and the riches they host.

Biography

Karin Orth completed her PhD in Earth Sciences at CODES, University of Tasmania. Prior to her PhD, she was at the Geological Survey of Victoria after completing her Bachelor of Science with Honours at Monash University. She has consulted to industry and government organisations and worked on a range of collaborative research projects. Her most recent project is on the an extensive province of volcanic rocks in north Western Australia called Hart-Carson Large Igneous Province.

Projects

Determination of the temporal relationship between the pyrite-silica-sericite alteration, and spatially associated uranium mineralisation, at Angularli Deposit, East Arnhem Land (2016)$10,465
Description
the project examines an exciting new area of unconformity-style uranium mineralisation in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, than has been discovered by Cameco. The deposit has several unusual alteration types associated with it. The aim is therefore to determine the timing of the different observed hydrothermal facies, and compare these to other examples of uranium-forming hydrothermal activity in the East Alligator Uranium Province. This work will allow us to understand the evolution of the deposit, and further to refine understanding of uranium forming processes in the north Australian craton in general during the Mesoproterozoic Era. This is our (UTas) first project in this area with Cameco. If the project is successful, it is likely it will lead to further collaborative research.

Paleoproterozoic mafic magmatism of the Kimberley Basin, Western Australia (2014)$212,948
Description
This project will address key issues on the crustal and mantle architecture of the Kimberley area of Western Australia. Through collaboration with the Geological Survey of Western Australia the project will answer fundamental questions on the amalgamation of Australia in the Paleoproterozoic. It will undertake targeted sampling and geochemical and mineral analyses from across the Kimberley area.
