Biography
Dr Lejun Zhang is a senior research fellow at CODES. He received his BSc and PhD from the Hefei University of Technology, China, in 2006 and 2011. In February 2010, Lejun joined CODES as a visiting PhD student for one year, funded by China's State Scholarship Fund, and was supervised by Professor David Cooke, Dr Zhaoshan Chang and Dr Huayong Chen. The main goal of his PhD project was to gain a comprehensive understanding of magmatism and mineralisation of the Luzong volcanic basin in the Yangtze River area of China to develop ore deposit models for the different mineralisation styles.

Research Themes
Lejun is very interested in magmatic-hydrothermal deposits, such as skarn, porphyry, epithermal and IOCG deposits. His studies incorporate the detailed anatomy of mineralisation and alteration zonation, the reconstruction of ore-forming processes using multiple techniques, and metallogenic analysis.

- As explorers search large, high-grade resources at greater depths, and mining operations are required to manage mineralogically and texturally complex orebodies, it is more critical than ever to develop effective exploration and characterisation tools that can be applied at the earliest stages of exploration and resource definition to reduce cost and risk. AMIRA Globals P1249 research project will embrace the challenges and realise the opportunities provided by complex orebodies of copper, gold, critical and other metals by developing new tools, methodologies and workflows for early mineralogical characterisation of complex orebodies and their alteration halos that can be upscaled to facilitate exploration for and domaining of complex orebodies

- This is a PhD student research project and will mainly focus on studying the characteristics and the genesis of the lithocaps and associated epithermal deposits in eastern China. The PhD candidate already on the scholarship from the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and University of Tasmania and planning to commence studies in October 2021. This candidate will make use of some unique exposure to determine in detail the vertical variations in mineralogy, chemistry and isotopic signatures of the lithocaps and associated epithermal deposits using field mapping, rock chip and drill core sampling, SWR analysis, in situ EMPA and LA-ICP-MS mineral chemistry analyses. This research project will contribute significantly to the global understanding of how lithocaph and epithermal deposits form and how to explore in this kind of environment with emphasis in methodologies applicable in West Pacific region.

- Skarns can form when hydrous shallow-crustal intrusions are emplaced in reactive carbonate rocks such as limestones and dolomites (Meinert et al., 2005). The ores and metasomatised rocks that result from the interaction of high-temperature magmatic-hydrothermal fluids with limestones are mineralogically and metallurgical complex and provide considerable challenges to mining and exploration. Previous work has shown that alteration chemistry can be used to discriminate environments of ore formation (e.g., porphyry copper versus skarn; Cross, 2000; Nadoll et al., 2015; Baker et al., 2017). Alteration mineral chemistry also shows great potential to be used as a tool for vectoring towards porphyry-style mineralisation and also for assessing the fertility of porphyry districts (Wilkinson et al., 2014). Its application for vectoring and fertility assessments of skarn districts remains untested.The Yaojialing large Zn-Cu-Au polymetallic deposit located at eastern of Tongling mineral district along the Middle-Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt (MLYB) in east China. As one of the polymetallic ore concentration areas in the central segment of MLYB, Tongling ore cluster is demonstrated as the most significant economic copper producer in China. The Zn-Cu-Au-W skarn mineralization at Yaojialing consists of two types of ore: one type occurs at the contact zone between intermediate-felsic intrusions and carbonates, the other represents orebodies occur as stratabound within the Upper Devonian to Triassic sequences.This project will document in detail of the alteration zonation patterns and alteration minerals geochemistry of the Yaojialing deposit, contribute to the overall understanding of the metallogeny and thereby facilitate effective exploration.

- The ultimate goal of this PhD project is to determine whether magnetite and/or epidote have potential for exploration vectoring and fertility assessment at Las Bambas. This goal will be achieved by addressing the following research questions and associated sub-questions (outcomes are italicized and stated in parentheses after each question). Note that if early investigation highlights fundamental barriers to the applicability of these phases, other minerals may be targeted:1) What is the spatial distribution and paragenesis of magnetite and epidote at Las Bambas? (maps, graphic logs and 3-D block models of magnetite abundance, modes of occurrence (vein, replacement, primary igneous, etc), relationships to mineralisation and alteration; protolith controls)2) What are the textural and chemical characteristics of magnetite and epidote at Las Bambas? - This PhD project is conducting a study of geoloical and geochemical speciality at mineralised and barren granites in Tasmania, and the formation of magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline-rich textures in the Sn granites.It will refine a geological model of magmatic-hydrothermal melt-fluid-volatile evolution for the development of Sn mineralisation.

- This project uses detailed geological, mapping and sampling as the starting point for building a build a 3-D model of hypogene and supergene alteration and sulfide mineral zonation in the Zijin open pit. In order to achieve this goal, the project will build on the wealth of previous knowledge and datamine Zijins extensive database of alteration mineralogy and assay data, supplementing this where necessary with detailed drill core logging, sampling and/or mapping of hypogene and supergene alteration and mineralization assemblages, coupled with SWIR analyses, lithogeochemistry, mineral chemistry, isotopic and fluid inclusion analyses. During this process, the project will increase the stock of knowledge about Zijin and a full understanding of Zijinshan high sulfidation and ore deposits. The outcomes will provide insights about a typical high sulfidation deposit, which would highly increase the understandings of other deposits of this type. The project will expand on an excellent knowledge base through detailed lab work such as microprobe, SWIR and laser ablation investigations of the kandite, alunite and sericite group minerals, with an emphasis on using subtle variations in these mineral compositions as a tool to help vector towards high sulfidation or porphyry-style ore zones. The development of the anaconda method will make it more useful for industry.
