Leonid Danyushevsky is Professor in the School of Physical Sciences at the University of Tasmania. He is currently the Head of Discipline, Earth Sciences and the Leader of CODES Enabling Technologies Research Module. His work focuses on magma generation processes within the Earth and their evolution during ascent to the surface, and on developing micro-analytical techniques for analysis of trace elements in minerals and rocks. He is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America.

Biography

Leonid Danyushevsky received his BSc (Hons) from the Moscow State University in Russia in 1983, and PhD from the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences in 1992. He worked in the Vernadsky Institute for nine years (1983-1992) and received a Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1992. In 1993 Leonid moved to UTAS to conduct research into magma generation and evolution processes under mid-ocean ridges and above subduction zones. Between 1995-1997 he held an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship and from 1998-2002 held an ARC QEII Research Fellowship. Since 2003 Leonid has been responsible for the operation of the CODES laser-ablation ICP-MS laboratory, which is used for trace-element analysis of minerals, glasses and fluid inclusions. In 2005-2013 Leonid has led CODES Technology Research Program. Since 2013 Leonid leads CODES Enabling Technologies Research Module and CODES Analytical Laboratories. Since 2015 he is the Head of Discipline, Earth Sciences in the School of Physical Sciences.

Research Themes

Leonid's research aligns to the University's research themes Environment, Resources and Sustainability and Marine, Antarctic and Maritime. Leonid is internationally recognised for his contribution to the development of the melt inclusion approach in igneous petrology, research into application of melt inclusions to understanding magma generation and evolution processes, and developing the software program Petrolog for modelling crystallisation of silicate magmas.

Currently his main research interests include:

  1. Development of LA-ICP-MS analytical techniques, reference materials, data processing tools and instrumentation, and their application to geological problems
  2. Numerical modelling of crystallisation and generation of mantle-derived magmas
  3. Development of experimental and geochemical studies of magmatic (melt, fluid and solid) inclusions in minerals

Collaboration

Leonid is involved in a large range of national and international collaborative research projects in the fields of igneous petrology and geochemistry, marine geosciences and geochemical micro-analysis. Currently, the most significant international collaborations are with researchers from USA, Switzerland, France, Russia, Canada and China.

Awards

  • 2014: Fellow of the American Mineralogical Society
  • 1992: Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This medal is awarded every two years to one young scientist (under 35 years of age) in the Earth Sciences in Russia.

Geometallurgical applications for sorting by surface analysis: review of status (2016 - 2017)$42,600

The project aims to assess the underlying opportunities for using surface methods in measuring ore moving on a belt to control sorting opportunities. It addresses the potential problems associated with rapid motion, irregular topography and dust distribution. It also considers opportunities to get by size sorting information from the data.These procedures already exist at varying levels from TRL stage 2 through to stage 4. The outcome of this proposal is to:a)Assess the advantages and disadvantages for each method including where in an ore sorting environment they are most competitiveb)suggest designs for a series of test that would move the most applicable methods to at least stage 5. to look for opportunities to maximise value in these methods.

This project will focus on identifying sources of acid rock drainage at the abandoned Scotia Mine, which currently is negatively impacting on the water quality of the adjacent Ringarooma River. The outcomes of this project will guide the rehabilitation of this legacy site. The information alongside bulk geochemical mineralogical data (CS analysis, XRD and XRF) will allow for full ARD static test characterisation of Scotia tailings materials. Pyrite: a deep-time capsule of ocean chemistry and atmosphere oxidation (2015 - 2017)$481,100
Description
Surprising little is known about trace element trends in past oceans, even though these data are vital for interpreting the evolution of the Earths atmosphere, evolutionary pathways of marine life and cycles of major mineral deposits. Using laser-based analysis of sedimentary pyrite in deep marine rocks, this project will produce, for the first time, temporal variation curves for 25 trace elements in seawater over the last 3.5 billion years. Preliminary research has validated the technique and demonstrated major changes in certain trace elements over geologically short periods. Outcomes will assist the minerals industry in the discovery of new deposits of zinc, copper, gold and iron ore in Australia.

Laser-ablation ICPMS analysis of spatial variations of sulphur isotopic composition: advancing applications in the field of ore deposit research (2012 - 2013)$82,350
Description
The first part of the project aimed at developing a laser-ablation quadrupole ICPMS technique for in-situ, spatially-resolved analysis of S isotopic composition in sulphide minerals, utilising an Agilent 7700 ICPMS instrument. The first stage of the project has achieved the following results: 1) the ranges of suitable laser energy were defined for three common sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite and bornite) on two different laser ablation systems; 2) the interface tubing between the laser and ICPMS was optimised to minimise signal noise and improve washout of the sulphur signal between analyses - this was achieved by utilising smoothing and centrifugal devices of different designs; 3) the collision cell tuning was optimised to remove the oxygen dimer interferences on sulphur isotopes using Xe as a reaction gas; 4) the characterisation of a set of sulphur isotope mineral standards. These outcomes have resulted in a technique to measure sulphur isotopes giving geologically meaningful results. This project is a continuation of the former project Laser-ablation ICPMS analysis of spatial variations of sulphur isotopic composition: advancing applications in the field of ore deposit research. The first part of the project aims at developing a laser-ablation quadrupole ICPMS technique for in-situ, spatially-resolved analysis of S isotopic composition in sulphide minerals, utilising an Agilent 7700 ICPMS instrument. The rationale of the first stage arose from the fact that currently, Laser Ablation - Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) is not adopted commercially due to issues such as robustness, ease of use and the availability of suitable standards. The project aims to address these issues to benefit ore deposit research and exploration efforts and increase uptake of LA-ICPMS as a standard technique in commercial exploration companies. This is expected to lead to increased demand for Agilent's market leading ICP-MS solutions and expand LA-ICP-MS's presence in the mining and minerals exploration industries and also facilitate inter-laboratory commercialization. The second stage project builds on the outcomes of the first with the aims of: 1) conducting a series of case studies on a range of ore deposit samples to demonstrate the robustness of the technique; and 2) redesigning the prototype components of the interface developed in the first stage of the project, in order to enable technology transfer to other LA-ICPMS laboratories within academia and the mining industry.
