Associate Professor Rebecca Carey is a former Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow, Tasmanian Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year, and the 2020 winner of the Australian Academy of Science Dorothy Hill Medal. Rebecca is interested in volcanic processes and environments, geological hazards, and indigenous cultural narratives around volcanic events.
Biography
Rebecca has taught undergraduate, Masters and PhD level Earth Science units throughout her postdoctoral appointments at the University of Hawaii, University of California at Berkeley, and her academic career at the University of Tasmania including: Planet Earth (KEA101) and Earth Evolution (KEA102); Earth’s Surface (KEA208), Tectonics and Volcanology (KEA306); roles at the University of Tasmania. Rebecca has a passion for teaching students in the field. These field-based units include: Honours Level Exploration Mapping Skills, and at Masters level Volcanology and Mineralisation in Volcanic Terrains (KEA703). She has led Australian and International volcanology field trips to New Zealand, Hawaii, and Iceland with groups of up to 25 students and scientists.
Rebecca regularly leads a CODES Masters field short course, Volcanology and Mineralisation in Volcanic Terrains (KEA703), which is a component of the University's Master of Economic Geology and Master of Science in Exploration Geoscience. She also co-leads an industry short course called Volcanic Processes, Products, Successions and Resources with Dr. Patrick Hayman from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Rebecca co-developed and taught a volcanic hazards course for the National Disaster Preparedness Training Centre (NDPTC) at the University of Hawaii, USA. This course focuses on volcanic crises: the hazards, vulnerabilities, impacts and risks, and the tools and processes that support monitoring, forecasts, warning, preparedness, mitigation and response. It was aimed to reach professionals with crisis responsibility in both public and private sectors, including emergency managers, government/public decision-makers, response personnel, utility managers, and urban planners.

- Understanding volcanic eruptive histories: Characterising past behaviours at volcanoes by studies of volcanic architectures and products in the field.
- Mechanisms and drivers of volcanic eruptions: Improving the understanding of driving mechanisms of small to large magnitude eruptions by using microanalytical and geochemical approaches on volcanic products.
- Subaerial pyroclast transport in eruption plumes: Characterising the dispersal of eruption products in eruption plumes to further understand and predict future eruptive behaviour of volcanoes.
- Submarine volcanoes and eruption dynamics: multidisciplinary characterisation of submarine volcanoes, their eruptive products, hydrothermal systems and interactions with the hydrosphere.
- Volcanic hazards, risk and mitigation: Characterising and assessing the uncertainties associated with volcanic hazards, risk perceptions and strategies to mitigate risks from future events.
- Volcanic architectures: Using the studies of modern submarine volcanic architectures and hydrothermal systems to enable strategies for more efficient ore deposit discoveries. This research is being conducted with various industry partners, the Australian Research Council and CODES researchers.
Research Themes
Rebecca's research and that of the Volcanology group aligns to the University's strategic research themes of Earth's Resources and Marine Science. Current projects combine volcanology, sedimentology, geochemistry, petrology, marine geology and economic geology. Her ARC-funded projects have focused on investigating the spatio-temporal relationships among plumes, plate boundaries and eruption products in the offshore Eastern Australian context, volcanic eruption, plume and transport processes in subaerial and submarine environments, and exploring complexities in the volcanic architectures in modern and ancient settings.
Collaboration
Rebecca’s research is highly collaborative. Her submarine volcanology projects often require accessing research vessels and Autonomous/Remote vehicles and thus are in collaboration with partners such as The Australian Marine National Facility, The Japanese Agency for Marine Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (USA), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), New Zealand Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), GEOMAR, Germany and Bristol University. Projects in subaerial volcanology are collaborative with academics across universities worldwide, and geological surveys. Projects in economic geology are collaborative with industry partners.

Publications
Rebecca is passionate about team-based research. Her most recent publication record includes PhD student-led research papers within large collaborative research projects. One example is the publications derived from the 2012 submarine eruption of Havre volcano, which are appearing in international peer-reviewed journals and providing remarkable insight into how the confining pressure of the ocean modulates eruption dynamics. Rebecca’s 2018 Science Advances paper has provided the eruption and architectural framework for these publications and represents the best documented framework for a recent silicic submarine eruption.
Rebecca is an Editor for the multidisciplinary high profile journal Geophysical Research Letters, however she is on hiatus due to parental care responsibilities. Formerly she was an editor for Geology (2010-2012).

- This research will address how the recovery dynamics of deep seafloor communities and hydrothermal systems after catastrophic seafloor disturbances. - The overarching aim of this research is to further understand the fundamental processes driving plate tectonic motions, particularly between Australia and Antarctica. The Balleny Plume has been implicated in causing/aiding the opening of the Tasman Sea and southwestern Pacific from about 80 Ma and continental breakup between Cape Adare and Tasmania 30-50 Myr ago. However, an alternative hypothesis proposes that volcanism in this region is instead related to a superswell. We are in a position to test these alternative hypotheses by utilizing existing Tasman/Balleny seamount samples in the existing U. Tasmania rock store, and new samples collected during the RV Investigator shiptime IN2018-18 in December 2018-January 2019. We will collect new Ar-Ar dates of key samples coupled with Sr, Nb, Pb isotopes.

- Mantle plumes are cylinders of hot rock that rise from the deep Earth. The Kerguelen plume, thought to be the magma source of Australia's active hot spot volcanoes, Heard and McDonald Islands in the Southern Ocean, is also likely responsible for newly discovered fields of hundreds of young seamounts on the adjacent seafloor. This project will test controversial models of plume dynamics to explain the complex spatial, temporal and geochemical patterns of volcanism in this unique geological setting. The outcomes will be a reassessment of plume volcanism with global implications for both active and ancient mantle plumes. This research attracts strong international interest and will boost Australia's international reputation for frontier science.

- This expedition will collect new information on powerful underwater volcanic eruptions. The voyage will target three representative submarine caldera volcanoes (Macauley, Havre and Healy) in the Kermadec arc, north of New Zealand. We will investigate the internal structure of these volcanoes to infer how they erupted, and where the eruption products were dispersed in the ocean. This research has strong with ties with the Australian mining industry by improving strategies for exploration in ancient volcanic terrains, and will also provide novel data on hazards linked to submarine volcanic eruptions, such as tsunamis and breakage of underwater communication cables.

- The project aims to develop new approaches to reconstruct the architecture of the volcanic host in hydrothermal ore deposits. Fingerprinting of volcanic units will be achieved through using novel, automated techniques of image analysis in addition to classical facies analysis and rock and mineral chemistry. This project will enhance mineral discovery through basin-scale lithostratigraphic reconstructions. Application of the technique to younger, undeformed volcanic units in New Zealand will improve exploration strategies in the much older southeasternAustralian continental crust. - The onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current was controlled by the Eocene rifting of Tasmania from Antarctica and evolution of the deep Tasman Gateway (e.g. Stickley et al. 2004; Scher et al. 2015). However, the exact mechanism enabling the onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current through the Tasman Gateway remains controversial, with rapid Eocene deepening (Stickley et al. 2004) and northward migration (Scher et al. 2015) both implicated. The source of controversy lies in alternative interpretations of the paleoenvironment and subsidence of the East Tasman Plateau, and the Cascade Seamount that sits upon it. Driven by interpretations of IODP drill site 1172 on the East Tasman Plateau, which was used as the type example for the region, the South Tasman Rise region (Fig. 1) is thought to have deepened rapidly in the late Eocene enabling formation of the deep oceanic gateway (Stickley et al. 2004; Hill and Exon, 2004). In this interpretation, the East Tasman Plateau was close to sea level during the Late Eocene and has subsided ~2 km since then to its present depth. However, the subsidence history inferred from dredge samples from the Cascade Seamount, a ~2000 m seamount sitting atop the East Tasman Plateau is significantly different (summarised in Figure 2). Here, dredged volcanic samples recovered opportunistically by fishing vessels also indicate near sea level conditions in the Late Eocene (Fig. 2; Quilty, 1997; 2001), but are located ~2 km shallower than the shallow marine Late Eocene sediments in IODP core 1172. Options to resolve this observed discrepancy include: 1) An alternative interpretation of the shallow marine siliciclastic sediments below 356 m in site 1172. Instead of being deposited in-situ as proposed by Stickley et al. (2004), these sediments may have been first deposited on the top/flank of the Cascade seamount and subsequently transported to site 1172 in sediment gravity flows (e.g. Hill and Exon, 2004; Scher et al. 2015). 2) Existing age and paleo-environment constraints for the Cascade Seamount rely heavily on rocks opportunistically provided by fishing vessels. As such, there is a possibility that these samples were not accurately located. 3) The glauconitic sand/silt unit in Site 1172 was formed in-situ, though at a greater depth than suggested by Hill and Exon (2004).

- Exploration on the modern seafloor reveals the deposits of deep (>1000m) silicic explosive eruptions, yet theory predicts that explosivity at these depths is largely suppressed. In 2012 the largest and deepest silicic submarine explosive eruption ever recorded took place at depths up to 1600m, also challenging this theory. This project leverages from a US research expedition to the eruption site. This project will constrain the physical and chemical factors that control explosivity using cutting-edge technologies. Australia's ancient submarine volcanoes host highly economic ore deposits. This research will enhance our ability to interpret ancient volcanic settings, thereby improving the potential for new ore deposit discoveries.

- The scarcity of iron limits biological productivity and carbon uptake in the nutrient rich waters of the Southern Ocean. This project will explore for the first time the role of undersea "hotspot" volcanoes in supplying iron to surface waters, thus linking the solid earth and the biosphere. Existing data indicate that fields of submarine volcanoes extend for several hundred kilometres from Heard and McDonald islands, among the world's most active hotspot volcanoes. We will produce a three dimensional, high-resolution bathymetric and backscatter map of the seafloor surrounding the islands. We will map the water column for chemical signatures of hydrothermal activity. From this mapping we will identify and sample candidate active submarine volcanoes, a first for this region. We will measure iron abundance, and reactivity in buoyant plumes over and downstream of these volcanoes, and evaluate physical mixing processes that might deliver this iron to surface waters.

- Our objectives are to:1. Determine the absolute age of 15 strategically selected lava flow samples on Heard Island using Ar-Ar dating techniques, permitting the recent volcanism of Heard Island temporally constrained.2. Integrate the Ar-Ar dating data from this project with historical and remote sensing data to construct a temporal sequence of lava producing events on Heard Island.3. Place the timing and magnitude of volcanic activity on Heard Island in the context of volcanism on the Kerguelen Plateau. MethodologyThe technique used to determine the ages of lavas will be Argon-Argon dating, a method that has been used successfully to date young lava flows in Hawaii. The samples used in this study will be analysed using a combination of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), petrography at the University of Tasmania and 40Ar/39Ar dating at Oregon State University, USA. The 40Ar/39Ar dating method is suitable for the study of relatively young (<Xxx ka) lava flow samples, as shown by recent research results from Prof. Duncan's research group. The 40Ar/39Ar method involves sample irradiation in a nuclear reactor. This converts a small number of 39K atoms to 39Ar atoms (McDougall & Harrison, 1999). Following irradiation, the sample is fused in a vacuum system. The sample is heated in a series of steps starting below the temperature of fusion (McDougall & Harrison, 1999). For each step the argon is analysed isotopically in a mass spectrometer. The relative abundance of 40Ar, 39Ar, 37Ar, 36Ar +/- 38Ar are measured. The mass spectrometer used for the Argon dating is a Thermo Scientific Model Argus VI mass spectrometer. This spectrometer is the leading technology in the Ar-Ar dating method providing a larger range of data, improved accuracy and the capacity to analyse smaller samples than previous mass spectrometersOutcomesWe will produce:a) A geological map of Heard Island using the Ar-Ar age dates determined during this study.b) Publications to international peer-reviewed journals.c) Geological information pertinent to fundamental understanding of Australia's only active volcano.Further, the outcomes of this study will inform the research mission voyage and dredging plans on the IMAS/UTAS Marine National Facility Cruise (R/V Investigator) to Heard Island in 2015/2016.

- Submarine volcanoes are more common than those on land and yet we know very little about eruption processes in such settings. Unique sample suites recovered via submersible from deep-marine silicic volcanoes will be used in the first study to constrain magmatic volatile abundances and exsolution processes at known eruption depths. Water depth retards volatile resolution, which potentially strongly modulates eruption styles and intensities, with important yet uncertain consequences for the delayed release of volatiles influencing metal transport and syn-and-post eruptive ore deposition. These results will transform current understanding of submarine eruption processes and the older submarine volcanic rock formations that form the continents.
