Distinguished Professor Ross Large is internationally renowned in ore deposit geology. His research has focused on understanding how mineral deposits form and using this knowledge to help industry find deposits of ore like gold. But he has now turned his geological skills to answering the most fundamental question of all – what controlled the evolution of life?

Discovering the key to evolution

Professor Large and his team have recently made a discovery that may hold the key to evolution. They have found a trace element that correlates to nearly every major extinction and growth event in Earth's 4.5 billion year history.

It is a globally significant discovery that throws into question Darwin's theory of evolution.

'Darwin suggested that evolution was somewhat random, driven by survival of the fittest. Our findings show that this is not the case. We have found that evolution is controlled by the cycle of continent movement on the earth.'

He has linked levels of the trace element selenium to the major extinction and growth events since life began. This is the first time the importance of selenium has ever been recognised.

'We have discovered that selenium is the critical element for life. When levels of selenium have been low, major extinction events have occurred. When levels have been high, life has flourished; like for example the evolution of giant fish.

Only two extinction events in Earth's history have not correlated to massive drops in selenium – the meteorite collisions that forced the dinosaurs into extinction and a series of volcanic eruptions that wiped out much of life on Earth 250 million years ago.

'There is a symbiotic relationship between the ocean, the earth and life. Just like humans need trace element nutrients to thrive and survive, so too do all other living things. These trace elements come from the earth. My research is focused on this relationship.

'Nutrients come into the oceans by erosion from the continents. As the earth's continents move and collide, mountain ranges are formed and over the millions of years that follow, these ranges slowly erode and their nutrients are carried to the ocean by rivers. Nutrients settle in the sediment on the ocean floor before being released again through another cycle of continent collision millions of years later. Major plate collisions to form supercontinents have happened about six times in Earth's history.'

Professor Large and his team look at rocks that form on the ocean floor and how their chemistry has changed over time. They have developed a method for mapping the ocean's trace elements over the its 3.5 billion year history, with life on earth.

'We have now discovered that these nutrients have controlled evolution in the oceans through the ages. This is only just now being understood.

'Levels of selenium become low when there is little movement in the earth's continents. It is a rare trace element, so without an active supply it can become dormant in the sediment on the ocean floor. Without it, things begin to die and life cannot flourish again until the continental plates collide, releasing selenium back into the oceans.'

It is making new discoveries like this that drives Professor Large.

'A rock can give you a message from one billion years ago. And sometimes you're surprised by the message. It is very exciting.

'When I was an undergraduate, our professor at UTAS told us that in science you must disbelieve if you can. You should never accept any given theory until proven. We've done that here and found something incredible.

'There are still a lot of discoveries to be made and we are in the right place to make them. We have an international team of the highest quality, and the best laboratories in the world for the research that we are doing.'

Professor Ross Large was the foundation Director of CODES an ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits at UTAS. He has published over 100 papers on the genesis of mineral deposits and is recognised as an international leader in the field of Economic Geology. He has won many awards for his research achievements, including the Society of Economic Geology Silver Medal, and Australian Academy of Science Haddon King Medal for research excellence relevant to the minerals industry. His current research interest is determining the chemistry of past oceans and how this relates to marine evolution and marine ore deposits.

Biography

Professor Large is a Distinguished Professor of Geology at the University of Tasmania and the recent past Director of CODES, the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits. Ross gained his PhD from the University of New England in 1973 and undertook a CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto in 1974. For 10 years Ross worked in mineral exploration in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania. In 1984 he joined the University of Tasmania and, five years later, established CODES as a National Key Centre jointly funded by the Australian Research Council, University of Tasmania, the Mining Industry and the State Government. Under his leadership, CODES has grown to become recognised as one of the top ore deposit research centres in the world, with a current research staff of 40 geoscientists, 80 postgraduate students, and an operating budget of around $11 million pa.

His research has involved close collaboration with the global mining industry to determine the geological and geochemical factors that control the genesis of, and exploration for, stratiform sediment- and volcanic-hosted gold and base metal mineral deposits. Recently he has developed an interest in the history of trace elements in the ocean and their relationship to ore deposits through time. Ross has gained a number of awards for his research, including the 1983 SEG Lindgren Award, 1989 AusIMM Presidents Award, 2005 Haddon King Medal, 2010 SEG Silver Medal and the 2011 BJ Skinner Award.

Research Themes

Professor Large leads two research directions at CODES, both connected by the mineral pyrite.

The first research direction involves studying the trace element chemistry of hydrothermal pyrite in ore deposits to interpret chemical evolution of the ore fluid and its relationship to mineral paragenesis. LA-ICPMS, which is a specialist analytical method developed at CODES, enables the mapping of trace elements in pyrite (Large et al., 2009) to develop chemical and mineral paragenesis. This is particularly important for gold deposits (Thomas et al., 2011; Large et al., 2012) where, for the first time, we can determine the timing of gold introduction in any particular hydrothermal system. The other value of pyrite chemistry is its use in mineral exploration. In collaboration with industry and several state geological surveys, Professor Large and his team are investigating pyrite as a fertility indicator and vectoring tool. This technology has great potential for exploration under cover, where pyrite trace element chemistry can be used to track towards ore centres.

The second research direction led by Professor Large is to develop the potential of marine pyrite as a deep time proxy for temporal changes in ocean chemistry (Large et al., 2014). This is an exciting development being pioneered by CODES at UTAS. Never before has it been possible to track nutrient trace elements in the ocean over the last 3.5 billion years. Nutrients are critical for life and evolution, thus by detailed tracking of trace elements using marine pyrite in the rock record, Professor Large's team has achieved a break-through and opened a window into understanding nutrient supply and consequent evolutionary patterns in the past oceans (Large et al., 2014; Gregory et al., 2015).

Application of a Technology Driven Approach to Defining Targets for Cu-Co Deposits Associated within the Neoproterozoic Tapley Hill Formation, South Australia (2018)$110,000
Description
The Tapley Hill Formation in South Australia has potential for sediment-hosted copper-cobalt ore bodies similar to those in the Central African Copper Belt. Although major worldclass deposits have not yet been discovered, there are moderate-grade deposits at Myall Creek, Mt Gunson, and Emmie Bluff that indicate significant Cu-Co hydrothermal systems were active during the Neoproterozoic in the Stuart Shelf region. Here we propose a 6 month project to inspect and sample previous drilling of the Tapley Hill Formation and associated carbonaceous shales and red beds across the Stuart Shelf and Adelaide Fold Belt.

The establishment of ocean anoxia and ocean acidification during the PETM: Understanding the biological and chemical response on a regional and global scale. (2016)$20,000
Description
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 Ma) is one of the most intense and abrupt intervals of global warming in the entire geological record. The warming event has been linked to a rapid increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, which acted to trap heat and increase global temperatures by more than 5 'C in just a few thousand years. Feedback from this event perpetrated the establishment on acid waters, leading to overturn of the carbonate compensation depth, and biological turnover. This project, funded by ANZIC-IODP, will sample and analyse cores from the Newfoundland shelf that archive the PETM. The project will utilise a range of organic and inorganic geochemical methods inorder to understand the conditions in the build-up and through the PETM

Pyrite: a deep-time capsule of ocean chemistry and atmosphere oxidation (2015 - 2017)$481,100
Description
Surprising little is known about trace element trends in past oceans, even though these data are vital for interpreting the evolution of the Earth's atmosphere, evolutionary pathways of marine life and cycles of major mineral deposits. Using laser-based analysis of sedimentary pyrite in deep marine rocks, this project will produce, for the first time, temporal variation curves for 25 trace elements in seawater over the last 3.5 billion years. Preliminary research has validated the technique and demonstrated major changes in certain trace elements over geologically short periods. Outcomes will assist the minerals industry in the discovery of new deposits of zinc, copper, gold and iron ore in Australia.

South Australia Pyrite, hematite and magnetite Fingerprint Database (2014 - 2017)$204,000
Description
The project aims to produce a database and associated interrogative software package that provides a chemical fingerprint for pyrite, hematite and magnetite of various mineral and ore associations in selected districts of the South Australia. CODES has pioneered quantitative trace element analyses and micro-mapping of pyrite and magnetite by LA-ICPMS, involving several AMIRA projects and multi-client projects with industry. The technique is now being applied in mineral exploration and mine feasibility studies by several mining and exploration companies. This project will apply the technique to fingerprinting the multi element composition of pyrite, hematite and magnetite in selected South Australian samples. Up to 1000 pyrite, hematite and magnetite analyses, will be taken from mineralised and barren rock types, with at least 35 trace elements (including Pb isotope ratios) measured and quantified per sample. The resultant database will enable fingerprinting of pyrite, hematite and magnetite from a range of ore deposits and barren environments within South Australia. Key elements in these three minerals will be developed as halo and vector tools. Exploration companies will be able to use the database, in conjunction with their own pyrite, hematite and magnetite data, to place priorities on pyrite, hematite and magnetite alteration and mineralisation intersected in exploration drill holes.

DeGrussa Vectoring Project (2014 - 2016)$303,377
Description
This project involves pioneered quantitative trace element analyses and micro-mapping of pyrite and magnetite - a technique now being applied in mineral exploration and mine feasibility studies by several mining and exploration companies. This project will apply the model to the DeGrussa deposit and include titanite to the list of minerals analysed. This project will apply the technique to fingerprinting the multi element composition of pyrite, hematite and magnetite in selected South Australian samples. Up to 1000 pyrite, hematite and magnetite analyses, will be undertaken from mineralised and barren rock types, with at least 35 trace elements (including Pb isotope ratios) measured and quantified per sample. This project will develop a new type of vector tool for exploring for VHMS deposits. This will build on similar work in WA that investigated pyrite trace element chemistry as vector towards orogenic gold and VHMS deposits. However, because pyrite is rare near the Degrussa deposit magnetite and titanate trace element composition will be used instead. This is an expansion of a previously completed pilot study that highlighted titanate trace element composition as a potential, extremely useful, vector towards mineralisation that has never been identified before.

Description
This study will test whether the observations of high gold content in pyrite extends to other basins and, if so, whether this can be used to discover new ore deposits or new mining districts. This is a controversial project that is based on a new concept of the genesis of gold deposits recently published. The outcomes will aid the exploration community greatly as, if proven effective, it will yield a novel tool for early stage exploration target generation.
