It started with a Big Bang. From a tiny point, 14 billion years ago, everything we know burst into existence in an explosion-like blaze of hydrogen and helium. The Universe began. From unimaginably small, dense, and hot beginnings, the Universe expanded rapidly to the astronomically large size we see today.
The evolution of the Universe
As the Universe expanded and cooled, objects formed in space. Stars, planets, solar systems, galaxies and clusters of galaxies came to be. Amongst it all, on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy, one planet formed in orbit around a star at just the right distance for intelligent life to flourish. Earth. How did we get here? Where did we come from? What is the fate of the Universe? It is the greatest mystery of all, one that physicists have been on a quest to solve through the ages.
Professor Andrew Cole is an astrophysicist studying the processes and effects that govern the evolution of matter in the Universe from the Big Bang to the present day. Essentially, how things came to be from the beginning of time as we know it. Along with many who came before him and undoubtedly many to follow, he is driven by an innate curiosity, stubbornness and a sense of adventure.
'When I come across a problem, an unknown, I can't leave it alone until I've figured it out,' he said.
Professor Cole started his PhD shortly after the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits 600km above the Earth, started producing the clearest ever images of the distant universe.
'There was a lot of buzz about all the things that could be done with these super sharp images. I looked at an early result that was hot off the press and asked my supervisor, why is this like that? He said nobody understands that, and I thought, I need to figure that out.'
For Professor Cole and those like him, the universe is an alluring mistress. Every answer found uncovers more questions.
Professor Cole's particular area of expertise is the evolution of nearby galaxies to our own, and how they built up their chemical elements over time.
'When the universe began, there was nothing by hydrogen and helium. Now there is gold, carbon, oxygen, iron, platinum, and every other element we know. I'm curious to know how those things built up over time.'
The ultimate result of his research is to understand how galaxies like our own formed and evolved over time to create the conditions that allow a planet like Earth to form. He is well known in the astrophysics community for progressing our knowledge in this area.
Using the world's largest ground-based and space telescopes, Professor Cole discovered that small isolated galaxies that are very distant from the Milky Way tend to have formed later than nearby galaxies.
'This indicates that nature and nurture play a role in evolution in the universe. Environmental interactions, how galaxies interact with other things in space, are important to their development. It's not just about the physical attributes of the galaxy itself.'
Trying to gather information that tests theories or ideas about how things should behave in the Universe is what takes up most of Professor Cole's time.
'I want to know how structures within the universe develop from the smallest to the largest scales,' he said, 'and, we learn a lot about basic physics along the way. The timespans and energies involved cannot be replicated in a lab. They can only be studied by looking out.'
According to Professor Cole, a civilisation is remembered for the knowledge they contribute. Success for Professor Cole lies with the knowledge he will contribute to the biggest question of all. And, through teaching, with the people he inspires to carry the torch.
Andrew Cole is a Professor in Physics and Astronomy and the Director of the Greenhill Observatory, the home of UTAS optical astronomy research infrastructure. Andrew's research specialisation is in the area of stellar populations: using the statistics of the distribution, motion, and chemistry of stars to learn about the structure, history and physical processes that shape galactic systems, including our own Milky Way. He uses the UTAS 1.3-metre Harlingten telescope to search for exoplanets around stars in the direction towards the centre of the Milky Way by analysis of gravitational microlensing light curves.
Biography
Andrew was awarded a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison for his observational studies of the properties of post-main-sequence stars in dwarf galaxies, under the supervision of Prof. Jay Gallagher. He subsequently took up a postdoctoral position at the University of Massachusetts (USA) and then became a research fellow of the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy, which he took up at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute (Groningen, NL). He returned to the US, taking up a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota and visiting assistant professorship at the nearby Macalester College, before joining the University of Tasmania in 2007.

Research Themes
Andrew is interested in the evolution of stars in galaxies and the resulting build-up of heavy elements over cosmic time. Galaxies like the Milky Way and its satellites contain stars of all ages, from the most recently formed to those as old as the Universe itself, nearly 14 billion years ago. By decoding the patterns of age, chemistry, and orbital motions in a galaxy astronomers can begin to learn the mechanisms by which gas and dark matter are accreted into gravitationally bound systems, collapse into stars, and return their inventory of heavy elements to the gaseous medium to be incorporated into the next generation of stars.
Galaxies smaller than the Milky Way dominate the Universe by number and these dwarf galaxies are a prime point of friction between data and the theory of galaxy formation. Andrew has primarily used observations at visible wavelengths, as well as the ultraviolet and infrared to make key measurements of the rate at which dwarf galaxies have built up their stellar content and their heavy elements over time. He has used the Hubble Space Telescope, the Anglo-Australian Telescope, and some of the largest telescopes on Earth, including the ESO Very Large Telescope and the Keck Telescope in his research.
Andrew is also interested in the frequency and types of exoplanet systems that may be present in the Milky Way. Our research group uses the UTAS 1.3m Harlingten Telescope as part of a worldwide network of telescopes monitoring the sky near the centre of the Milky Way to search for planets using a highly-specialised technique known as gravitational microlensing that takes advantage of General Relativity and the relative motions of stars in different parts of the Galaxy to discover exoplanets that cannot be detected by more conventional means. This technique is highly effective at detecting the unusual planets that are challenging the orthodox theories of solar system formation and evolution.
Collaboration
Andrew is involved in the PLANet microlensing survey and follow-up for exoplanets, involving dozens of astronomers at institutions on six continents. At any given time he is also involved with several international projects based around Hubble Space Telescope or ground-based astronomical survey programs.

Andrew has been awarded numerous grants in support of his research over the course of his career. His most significant grants since coming to Tasmania include an Australia-India Strategic Research Fund grant from the Department of Industry (2010) supporting his research on the kinematics and structure of the Magellanic Clouds, and an ARC LIEF infrastructure grant in support of the development of the Greenhill Observatory (2011).

- Description
- The Legacy Survey for Space and Time (LSST) is a 10-year US survey where the entire Southern Sky will be imaged every few days starting in 2023. The dataset will provide the highest resolution and sensitivity images ever recorded as well as 10 million alerts per day to transient objects, transforming many areas of astrophysics. The 8.4m telescope is under construction in Chile with over 1000 scientists from 25+ countries already involved. This proposal supports in-kind contributions to LSST, providing full membership of LSST to ~50 Australian astronomers and their students. Expected outcomes include training of young researchers in big data, strong international links and enhanced capacity for Australian leadership in astrophysics research.

- This project benefits the national interest through its potential to contribute to answering some of the biggest questions possible: the formation of Earth-like planets, and the origin and prevalence of life itself. These questions lie at the heart of scientific curiosity and are of broad interest to the public. The results of astronomical research have dramatic impact on the public view of the nature of life and our place in the Universe. Fundamental basic research is essential to educate workers for a technically-based, information-driven economy, and to build the knowledge base of scientists across applied and commercial sectors. Exoplanet research is an area of strengthfor Australian astronomy; this project has tremendous synergy with recent major investments by the government in astronomy infrastructure. The discovery of exoplanets in diverse environments across the Milky Way is a unique opportunity to engage public interest in science, and will encourage students to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects by raising the profile of Australian fundamental scientific research.

- Modern astrophysics is reliant on technology to monitor time-variable phenomena on scales from minutes to years for millions of stars. We are building a state of the art 1.3m optical telescope in central Tasmania, to be fully remotely-operable and furnished with a high-resolution wide-field camera and a powerful spectrograph. This will be a powerful and versatile tool for astrophysics. It will significantly advance studies of the frequency of Earth-like planets around other stars, and a wide range of planetary and stellar astrophysics questions including the variability of stars like the Sun. The new telescope will support dozens of astronomers who will use it for the equivalent of over 100 nights per year.

Research Supervision
Andrew typically supervises 2-3 PhD candidates at any given time, working on observational or theoretical astrophysics research projects. Students wishing to take up a project under his supervision should have minimum a bachelor of science in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, with some research experience. Projects may be available in the areas of exoplanet searches, the Magellanic Clouds, and resolved stellar populations; prospective students are advised to contact Andrew for details and advice.
