Expertise
Originally from the Caribbean, Joanna’s research assists island States and Territories to better manage catchments and low-lying sedimentary shorelines, where human resource use is most intensive. Her research is in the UTAS Theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, and within the Discipline and School’s focuses on climate change adaptation and conservation of natural resources. Her study area is primarily the Pacific islands, where island places share geomorphic, biodiversity and socio-economic situations with our island state of Tasmania, and she have become an international expert on the region’s wetlands, particularly mangroves.
Climate change vulnerability assessment requires an inter-disciplinary Geographer’s approach to integration of ecosystem aspects of sensitivity, tectonic and climatic aspects of exposure, and human and management aspects of adaptive capacity. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) (USA) gained United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Global Environmental Facility funding for a Project on development of vulnerability assessment procedures from case study sites in Africa and the Pacific islands. Joanna was Chief Scientist of this project, resulting in developing a practice for use elsewhere.
Researching in developing countries on vulnerability assessment, funded by agencies such as WWF US, US Aid, and Australian Aid has enabled knowledge transfer from Joanna’s research to communities. She has developed and published books that are designed to explain, engage and be understood by local communities to allow improved local based management. See

Grants & Funding
Sense-T: Adaptive Water Resource Management (Environmental research element).
About to start it's phase 2, this project will continue to refine technologies Joanna and her team have developed in ways to apply sensor technologies for enabling improved water management in Tasmanian irrigation catchments.
Implementation of Coastal Ecosystem based Adaptation to Climate Change.
Currently in its phase 3, this project will continue to research effective research based adaptation approaches to coastal management. Harnessing the adaptive forces of nature may be one of our most widely applicable, economically viable and effective tools to combat the impacts of climate change.

- Description
- Stage 1 of the Sense-T Adaptive Water Resources Management Project (2013-2015) developed ways to apply sensor technologies for enabling improved water management in two Tasmanian irrigation catchments. Key findings that inform the scope and objectives of this Stage 2 application: 1) Current infrastructure and targeted new sensor deployment enabled improved low-flow modelling and prediction of water availability in relation to critical environmental thresholds. 2) This new level of situational awareness enabled irrigation communities to engage in more contemporary adaptive co-management, particularly at critical production times coinciding with low flows. This project will continue to refine the technology developed in Stage 1, and expand its scope to a larger more complex catchment.
