Research Themes
John commits acts of physical and conceptual frottage on communities, objects and systems; 'rubbings' that recycle the act and artefact of lived experience. Mediating status, value and 'damage by design' Vella develops diverse testimonies to the epic and incidental aspects of our personal and material histories.
John's research practice is diverse and has evolved through a number of phases that include abstract painting – challenging subject/object relations, industry collaborations – employing pragmatic methodologies to poetic ends and site specific engagement mediated and motivated through expanding notions of public. Vella's interests and engagement are broad and explore frangibility and permanency, Site Specificity in particular relation to the faking of belonging and public art infected by a culture of civic branding.
John's research has been driven by a commitment to 'creativity, culture and society'. Vella's current research investigates the the aesthetics and semantics of administrative forms and the ritualised procedures of ‘business’ as structuring forces of contemporary life. Vella seeks to extract, regenerate and apply ‘abstract’ visual languages as socially engaged and transformative catalysts. In accord with the investigations of Lakoff and Johnson ‘…art [is then engaged as] a matter of imaginative rationality, and, [as] a means of creating new realities…’
