Linda Hunt is the Director of Partnerships and Engagement and a Lecturer in Media in the School of Creative Arts and Media. She is also the Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator. Linda has a strong and active record of industry engagement, teaching and research. Her current research focuses on the interplay between the Australian news media, science and politics in Antarctica. She is also interested in the role of news in public engagement with Antarctica, and how the news is drawn upon to make sense of scientific and environmental change in the region.
Linda joined The Media School as a sessional teacher in 2018 and has been lecturing full-time since January 2020. She was recently appointed to an ongoing role as Lecturer and Director Partnerships and Engagement. In this role, she works with the Head of School on strategic partnership coordination and management.
Before entering academia, Linda was a broadcast journalist for ABC News. She has reported, produced and presented news on radio and television. Science, environment and health stories were a particular focus of her news career, with two reporting assignments to Antarctica among the highlights. She has also worked as a print journalist and freelance writer.
Linda also has broad experience working in public relations, communications, events and other creative industries. This included the role of Communication Manager for the $14-million ARC Centre for Forest Value based in the School of Natural Sciences at UTAS.

As Director Partnerships and Engagement CAM, Linda provides support to the Head of School on strategic partnership coordination and management. She is also the Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator for The Media School and was responsible for the redesign of the suite of post-graduate Strategic Communication courses for 2022. Linda was part of the inaugural committee and Secretary for the Tasmanian branch of Women in Media Australia, which launched at a special event at MONA in August 2019. She is currently part of the Conference Program Committee for the next Oral History Australia Biennial Conference, to be held in 2022.
Linda has taught a range of media and communication units since 2018. In that time, she has contributed to the Bachelor of Media, and the Master of Strategic Communication by developing several units. This contribution helps to ensure the skills taught at The Media School reflect the changes in technology and professional practice of an industry undergoing digital disruption to its business models.

Linda’s research into news media representations of Antarctica fills a gap in existing scholarship investigating Australia’s relationship with the continent. She uses framing analysis to understand how Antarctica is being mediated in the news. Her interviews with journalists, scientists and other Antarctic stakeholders will shed new light on the interplay between news, science and politics in Antarctica.
Media representations of Antarctica
Linda’s PhD project is researching news media representations of Antarctica, using the Australian news media as a case study. She is investigating how the news media frames Australia’s interests in Antarctica and how this influences public discourse and subsequent policy development. This is considered in the context of Australia’s long-standing connection with the continent, the geopolitics of Antarctic governance, and the risk posed by a changing climate.
Perceptions of Antarctica:
Linda is part of an international research group investigating the impacts of COVID-19 on Antarctica. She is contributing to the SCAR SC-HASS Working Party 4: Perceptions of Antarctica. In two overlapping subgroups (Media Representations of Antarctica and Cultural History) this WP researches how public perceptions of Antarctica have changed through the pandemic.

- The AAD-HASS project. The AAD does not have baseline data around the public's understanding of, and support for, Australia's activities in Antarctica. The funding detailed here covers two questionnaires - the AuSSA (national) and Tasmania Project (Tasmania) - that will run from January 2022. AuSSA, The Australian Survey of Social Attitudes, is coordinated by Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Incorporated (ACSPRI), which is a is a not-for-profit organisation.
