Research Themes
Matt’s research aligns to the University’s research theme of Creativity, Culture, and Society.
Matt is interested in the notions of the importation of musical culture, and its sociological and cultural implications. The construction of a local canon, issues of appropriation from incomplete data, prevailing attitudes towards popular culture, notions of 'island-ness', (de-) contextualisation and modernity are all of interest. Matt is also interested in research topics pertaining to the performance of original and improvised music, including relationships between performers, notions of musical texture, and performance-as-composition.
Collaboration
Matt is currently involved in several projects that are exploring areas including music for media, jazz performance practice, and computer and human interaction through music systems.
Current projects

Projects
- Description
- This project will create an iterative multi-media installation and performance work using projected animations, sound scape, mirrored cut outs and live improvised music performance at 3 separate venues that explores the role of the self, the observer and the participant in current image and screen culture. The first stage of the project develops and creates and exhibits the framework, animations and installation strategies which will be used as catalysts for two further sound based performance base iterations. As the work evolves the performance and audience reaction will be captured and then folded back into the animations and installation through mutli-media interventions. This evolution is based on cause and effect, action and re-action where the observer and participants become integral to, and then integrated in, the visual elements of the work.
