Dr Louise Wallis is a Deputy Director of the Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood (CSAW) and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Tasmania. Her teaching and research are entwined across design-build, timber processing and products, studio pedagogy, architectural education, collaboration, and architectural science (hygrothermal, thermal comfort). She has held many senior leadership roles and chief investigator on several national competitive grants.

Biography

Louise has over 20 years’ experience in teaching and researching Architectural education at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Her attraction to the School of Architecture and Design was their Learning-by-Making (LBM) curriculum approach which she continues to teach into, research and publish. She is currently working on the Species Hotel project with her first-year students to design and build sculptural habitat for threatened animals in the Tasmanian Midlands.

Louise is also working on research grants involving timber processing and products (Regional Research Collaboration to boost research capability in food and wood industries, Innovation Research Grants with hardwood processors, and soon the ARC Advance Timber Hub led by University of Queensland). She co-supervises several PhD students in timber research and hygrothermal performance of timber framed buildings. Till recently her research work focused on understanding the trends and challenges for Architectural Education in Australia and New Zealand. She was a chief investigator on key studies (2019 and 2007), including her mixed research method doctorate (2017) and nationally competitive grants (2011 and 2009) assessing teamwork and creativity in Architectural education. In addition, she has been and is a member of visiting accreditation panels (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022) and held senior roles in learning and teaching at School, College and University levels.

Research Themes

Louise’s research aligns to the University’s research theme of Creativity, Culture and Society. Her research interests include understanding how design and creativity are taught and assessed in studio models, in particular the discipline of Architecture. The work attempts to provide greater clarity in the use and understanding of studio models, and identifies these problems exist in many allied and non-allied disciplines. Her research work has also delved into the use of “live” projects, collaborative design and the assessment of teamwork activities. A mixed method approach is often employed to her research and involves the analysis of survey data, secondary sources, and observations. Louise is keen to collaborate or co-supervise projects that explores experiential learning, pedagogy and design education.

Collaboration

In the past, Louise has collaborated in three national Learning and Teaching grants with the aim of understanding architectural education and the challenges faced by academics in teaching and assessing creativity and teamwork. Combined, these collaborative projects involve partnerships between Schools of Architecture at several Australian universities, including the University of Newcastle, Deakin University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Victoria University.

Boosting research capability to develop value-added products for the food and wood industries in regional areas. (2021 - 2023)$4,015,643
Description
Food and wood products are areas of strategic growth for Tasmania and regional Australia, contributing $1.6 billion and $615 million, respectively, to the annual Tasmanian economy. A thriving and sustainable sector requires continued innovation to locally value-add and diversify products and markets. Innovation is underpinned by research strengths and a workforce sector connected to advances in technology and trained graduates. The University of Tasmania (UTas) is committed, through its strategic plan, to deliver impactful research to help Tasmania prosper, and to have influence nationally and globally. Through collaborations, this three-year project will increase research and development activity at UTas to support value-adding in niche food and wood products in regional areas. The delivery of the project will build cross-disciplinary, integrated collaborations at UTas, and together with long-term external partnerships and collaborations, will maximise the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches to delivering impactful research for the regions

Enhancing and assessing group and team learning in architecture and related design contexts (2011 - 2012)$220,000
Description
This project will: 1) investigate how best to support through teaching and assessment the learning of team working skills in architecture and related design disciplines; 2) propose curricula renewal to include a structured framework for teaching team working skills with an associated suite of assessment tools; and 3) develop and document best-practice models of assessing individual contributions to teamwork within the emotive and highly subjective learning context of creating architecture. This framework will assist teachers of architecture (and other design and applied arts disciplines) to: develop innovative approaches to collaborative studio-based learning in multi-disciplinary and mono-disciplinary contexts; structure group work and team design within curricula; develop graduate attributes for teamwork; and assess team design in a consistent, transparent and objective manner to support team-working skills and increased learner confidence.
