Achievements

Karsten studied mineralogy in Hannover and Clausthal in Germany focussing predominantly on analytical geochemistry and applied mineralogy. He obtained his Dipl.Min. (Masters) in 1996 with a thesis on the analysis of sewage sludge ashes (to be used as an additive in brick making) and his Dr. rer. nat. (PhD) in 2000 with an EPMA-focussed work on the trace element distribution in basalt dikes intruded into evaporite domes (as a natural analogon to radioactive waste deposits). During his PhD he also operated the Cameca SX100 microprobe of Clausthal Uni. Afterwards he worked several years as a PostDoc in the field of materials science, investigating ionic transport in semiconducting oxides by means of high temperature experiments and SIMS and EPMA analyses.

General Responsibilities

Karsten joined the CSL in mid 2006 and is responsible for the Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis Facility. The facility serves a wide range of university and external users from the earth sciences, chemistry, plant science, agricultural science, zoology, marine sciences and others.

Karsten is currently the secretary of the Australian Microbeam Analysis Society (AMAS) and former Tasmanian representative of AMAS and the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society (AMMS). He co-chaired the 13th Australian Microbeam Analysis Symposium (AMAS XIII) which was held in Hobart 9-13 February 2015.

A state-of-the-art field emission electron microprobe for Tasmania (2016)$600,000
Description
This proposal aims to replace an existing 12-year old conventional electron microprobe with a state-of-the art fieldemission electron microprobe instrument capable of in-situ, low-level, quantitative non-destructive chemicalanalysis and mapping of element distribution at sub-micron resolution. The instrument will also performcathodoluminescence analysis to reveal crystal growth histories. This equipment will provide researchers andstudents at the University of Tasmania working in the fields of Earth and Materials Sciences, and the broaderTasmanian community with direct access to this technique ensuring continuing competitiveness to attract publicand industry funding and maintain high-quality research output.

Building and measuring the quality of fine Australian sparkling wines, through identification of the impact compounds responsible for autolytic character in sparkling wine, and novel winemaking tech (2016 - 2020)$1,161,527
Description
This project will contribute to impact compound identification for desirable flavours, mouthfeel and texture of fine Australian sparkling wines. A novel objective measure of sparkling juice and wine quality will be further developed which has the capacity to be adapted to in-line sensing with the potential to automate press fraction cut-offs, providing significant cost-savings to industry. Novel technologies to hasten the autolysis of yeast and therefore produce higher quality sparkling wines in a shorter amount of time will also be investigated.
