Dr. Angela Escolme is a Lecturer and Researcher in Geology and Geometallurgy in the School of Natural Sciences in the College of Sciences and Engineering.  She is Honours Coordinator for the discipline of Earth Sciences and her research falls under the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES). Angela’s research goals are to advance our understanding of mineral deposits and improve current approaches to measuring fundamental rock characteristics that impact on mineral processing behaviour (mineralogy, mineral chemistry, texture and structure) to enable environmental, social and economic benefits to be realised.

Dr Escolme’s research activities predominantly involve field studies, microanalytical techniques and manipulation of geochemical and hyperspectral datasets. Angela currently leads a module of AMIRA International project P1202 ‘Finding and defining the next generation of Tier 1 ore deposits’ (Module 4: The transition zone) where the research team are developing new tools and methodologies for the characterisation of alteration overprints in the transition zone of porphyry copper deposits. Key outcomes include workflows for effective characterisation of complex gangue mineralogy, new methodologies for textural classification of hyperspectral imagery and classification of mineral mixtures from hyperspectral imagery, and new mineral chemistry vectors for finding porphyry copper deposits.

Biography

After graduating from University of Manchester, UK, with a Master of Earth Sciences, Angela worked as an Exploration Project Geologist at a major remote gold mine in Western Australia for four years. Following this she perused a PhD in geochemistry and geometallurgy at University of Tasmania where she studied the enigmatic Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit, Chile.

Angela held a postdoctoral research fellow position with the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub: Transforming the Mining Value Chain (TMVC) at CODES from 2017 before taking a staff position with Earth Sciences in 2020. During this time Angela was intimately involved in designing and establishing Module 4 of the AMIRA P1202 ‘Finding and defining the next generation of Tier 1 ore deposits’, a collaborative industry research project that commenced in 2018, as well as several other applied research projects working closely with industry partners to deliver outcomes to research questions. Since transitioning to a balanced teaching and research role, Angela has enjoyed inspiring the next generation of geologists and supporting postgraduate students in reaching their full potential.

Teaching expertise

Angela contributes teaching to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate subjects in Earth Sciences, in particular mineralogy, ore deposits and geometallurgy; including lectures, tutorials, practicals and field excursions. Angela has also delivered a number of short courses for research stakeholders, on a variety of subjects including calculated mineralogy, whole rock geochemistry applications, and geology for gold metallurgists. Angela strives for excellence in teaching and to inspire her students.

Research Themes

Angela’s research aligns to the University’s research themes Environment, Resources and Sustainability, and Data, Knowledge and Decisions. Her research interests include geometallurgy, in particular multi-scale ore characterisation, and ore deposit studies. Angela is currently focussed on the integration of datasets at a range of scales to increase ore body knowledge with a special focus on porphyry copper deposits. Mineralogy, mineral chemistry and texture are fundamental parameters for understanding rock behaviour in mineral processing, however current approaches to measuring and quantifying these parameters are largely inadequate for the mining environment. Angela’s goal is to improve these practices to enable economic, environmental and social benefits to be realised.

Geochronology of the Rincones de Araya porphyry prospect (2019)$7,092
Description
This project will provide geochronological context for mineralizing events at the Rincones de Araya porphyry project. Dating ofmolybdenite (Re-Os). alunite (Ar-Ar). and host intrusions (U-Pb, zircon) will ideally produce a geochronological framework for understanding thevariable alteration and mineralization present at the site. This funding has been provided by the SEG and these analyses will supplement work that ispart of AMIRA P1202, increasing the impact of the research.

Identification and characterisation of geological domains for geometallurgical and geoenvironmental modelling (2018 - 2019)$20,000
Description
Mining operations are increasingly reliant on digital geological data to inform all aspects of ore deposit extraction, refinement and remediation. These data, e.g. drill core hyperspectral imagery, contain information on geological features and processes that are typically interpreted by geologists using drill core logs and geochemical assays. Despite this, converting high resolution hyperspectral imagery and associated mineralogical classifications into geological knowledge that informs mine-scale block models is yet to be fully realised. This PhD project will make use of unprecedented access to multi-scale digital geological data from a variety of porphyry and epithermal ore deposits with the overarching aim of defining and characterising geological features relevant to mining operations. Research activities are expected to include investigation, assessment and implementation of image processing and supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods for defining patterns in multi-scale geological data. The outcomes of this project are expected to facilitate the integration of large volumes of digital data from diverse sources with existing geological knowledge in order to develop the next generation of models for ore deposit exploitation. As this PhD project forms part of the ARC Transforming the Mining Value Chain (TMVC) AMIRA P1202 funded "Far-field and near mine footprints" project, specifically within Module 4 "The transition zone". This project will involve close collaboration with TMVC and AMIRA P2102 project industry and academic partners.

Ore Characterisation at the Productora deposit, Chile (2014 - 2016)$122,660
Description
The Productura deposit is a pre-feasibility IOCG-style breccia hosted Cu-Au-Mo deposit located in Chile. The aims of this PhD project are to investigate relationships between alteration patterns and ore textures at the Productora deposit, particularly in the transitional ore zone, which may impact on liberation behaviour and flotation response. It will develop quantitative and predictive geometallurgical models through characterisation of the ore(s) and altered rocks at Productora in order to facilitate modelling and prediction of processing behaviour. The emphasis will be on understanding mineralogical and geochemical zonation patterns and their relationship with geometallurgical characteristics of the ores, including mineral texture and physical properties related to processing behaviour. Research techniques will include drill core logging and high resolution imaging, automated optical microscopy, mineral liberation analysis (MLA), LA-ICPMS analysis and ore genesis/geochemical techniques as required.
