Projects

The tectonic significant of mafic/ultramafic igneous rocks in western Tasmania (2020 - 2022)$18,800
Description
Geochemistry of igneous rocks is an important indicator of the tectonic settings of their formation used to constrain both the origin of geological formations in ancient terrains and geodynamic models of Earth evolution. The project will be undertaken in close collaboration with Mineral Resources Tasmania. The project will focus on detailed understanding of geochemical features and field relationships of several mafic/ultramafic magmatic series occurring within Cambrian orogenic sequences in western Tasmania formed during the Tyennan Orogeny when the proto-Tasmanian continental block had collided with an intra-oceanic subduction zone.

Characterizing Pyrite Chemistry of Black Shales Hosting Stratiform Zn-Pb -Ag & Application to Mineral Exploration. (2019 - 2020)$605,000
Description
This project involves analysing the chemistry of sedimentary pyrite in black shales through time to determine a) nutrient levels in past oceans and how this relates to evolution of life, and b) sedimentary basins that host zinc and copper deposits and development of vectors to assist exploration

Mineralogical and geochemical characterization of historical slag (2017)$4,715
Description
This project will examine slag materials from 2 sites in Tasmania and will use microanalysis and mineral chemistry techniques toexplore if there remain any recoverable metals, and if so, determine which processing methodologies are best suited. It will also simulate dust generation from these wastes to identify if there is preferential deportment of deleterious metals into finer particle size fractions.

The establishment of ocean anoxia and ocean acidification during the PETM: Understanding the biological and chemical response on a regional and global scale. (2016)$20,000
Description
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 Ma) is one of the most intense and abrupt intervals of global warming in the entire geological record. The warming event has been linked to a rapid increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, which acted to trap heat and increase global temperatures by more than 5 'C in just a few thousand years. Feedback from this event perpetrated the establishment on acid waters, leading to overturn of the carbonate compensation depth, and biological turnover. This project, funded by ANZIC-IODP, will sample and analyse cores from the Newfoundland shelf that archive the PETM. The project will utilise a range of organic and inorganic geochemical methods inorder to understand the conditions in the build-up and through the PETM
