Dr. Andrew Fluck trained as a teacher in Bristol, England. He has taught science, mathematics and computing in Nigeria, England and Australia. Andrew commenced at the University of Tasmania as a seconded teacher from the Tasmanian Department of Education in 1995.

Biography

Andrew is a past secretary of the Australian Council for Computers in Education (ACCE), and is now a senior lecturer in information technology education at the University of Tasmania. His numerous publications reflect his research interests in the transformational potential of computers in education. He was a co-author of the government report Making Better Connections and the book Seven steps to ICT integration. His funded research investigates the use of computers to teach integral calculus and quantum mechanics in primary schools and eExaminations, where students take their own computers into the exam hall. He serves on the executive of Working Group 3.3 (research into educational applications of information technologies) for IFIP/UNESCO.  Andrew is also an avid longbow archer and continental archery judge. Expertise

Andrew's research interest is in the area of computer-assisted curriculum transformation

Research Themes

My research bridges the UTAS theme areas of Creativity, Culture and Society and Data, Knowledge and Decisions. This interdisciplinary set of investigations is showing how computers can do far more than assist learning the pre-IT curriculum, but can transform schooling entirely.

Collaboration

In the last three years, Andrew has forged productive partnerships with Nigeria (Adebayo, Abdulhamid & Fluck 2013), Scotland (Mogey & Fluck, 2014); England (host of visit to UTAS by Professor Peter Twining, 2013); and amongst an international working group of scholars (UNESCO-WG3.3). For 2016 Andrew has been awarded study leave to work on eExams with colleagues in Iceland, Finland and the UK.

Awards

Andrew was presented with Research Merit Certificates by the Faculty of Education from 2011-16. His published work has been awarded three best paper awards as follows:

Fluck, A and Ranmuthugala, SD and Chin, CKH and Penesis, I, (2011) 'Calculus in elementary school: an example of ICT-based curriculum transformation', OUTSTANDING PAPER AWARD, Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education International Conference (SITE 2011), Nashville, USA

Grants & Funding

In July 2015, the Office for Learning and Teaching allocated its largest ever innovation and development grant ($500,000) to 'Transforming exams across Australia: processes and platform for e-exams in high stakes, supervised environments'. Andrew is a core team member for this project which grew out of his eExams work at UTAS.

Andrew's next biggest project ($150k) is Calculus for Kids funded by the Australian Research Council. The team consists of an interdisciplinary group of researchers from the Faculty of Education and the Australian Maritime College. This project is training teachers in 4 (possibly more!) states to deliver lessons in integral calculus for Year 6 students. At the end of the project the students take an test based on the undergraduate engineering exam – and generally pass with flying colours.

The other project ($40k) is Science-ercise, funded by the Ian Potter Foundation. This is giving primary school students in North-West Tasmania the opportunity to use computers in linear and projectile motion, wave/particle duality and special relativity.

Transforming exams across Australia: Processes and platform for e-exams in high stakes, supervised environments (2015 - 2017)$500,000
Description
This project will address a national gap in the pedagogical sophistication of high stakes supervised assessments by: (1) developing guidelines for students, educators and administrators to effectively prepare and undertake e-exams and (2) building an e-exam platform for supervised, bring-your-own laptop settings that provides a 'whole computer' environment, computer marked questions and secure electronic response reticulation. As a comprehensive tool set for ICT enhanced high stakes assessment, the innovation is designed to be open, modular and as technology neutral as possible, making it applicable sector wide. E-exams will provide a greatly expanded pedagogical landscape for assessing students in ways consistent with the information rich contemporary society, while opening the opportunity to leverage learning analytical techniques to enhance our knowledge of student engagement in high stakes supervised assessments. Validation will take place via a national action research project across multiple institutional settings with an associate partner program helping to embed e-exams practice beyond the core project team.

Processes and Platform for e-exams in supervised BYOD environments (2014)$50,000
Description
This project will develop guidelines for educators and students to effectively prepare and undertake e-exams and build a working prototype of an e-exam platform to be used in supervised, bring your own device BYOD settings, that includes computer marked questions and secure electronic reticulation of student responses.

Calculus in the real world: transforming the way we teach Mathematics in primary education (2013 - 2015)$150,000
Description
This project will demonstrate a transformation in the way mathematics is taught to primary school students, enabling them to solve real-world problems using calculus. Building on an award-winning pilot project in which primary students used professional engineering software to master university-level calculus, the project will provide hundreds of young people access to this and more advanced topics. Teachers will be trained to use multi-media learning materials designed at the University of Tasmania in conjunction with an inter-disciplinary team involving the Australian Maritime College. The project will promote a love of learning mathematics to encourage enrolment in tertiary subjects such as Science and Engineering, which have been in decline.

Science-ercise: modern physics in primary classrooms of North-West Tasmania (2013 - 2014)$36,362
Description
This project will show that modern physics can be understood by primary school students, who can then use these new skills to solve real-world problems usually only attempted by senior secondary students.
