Zi Siang See
Lecturer in Innovation Design, Digital Learning and Technology
Building A (Education) , Newnham Campus
+61406940386 (phone)
Dr Zi Siang See has specialised over the past 10 years in the design, use and integration of interactive media, including but not limited to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) research-creation. Zi has over 15 years’ experience of working within the field of interaction design and digital media in both industry and within university institutions, nationally and internationally. These include collaborations with multinational corporations such as McDonald’s, Lafarge Cement, Servier, Leo Burnett, DDB and Saatchi & Saatchi Arachnid. As an early career researcher, he has been part of various MOOC projects and been actively involved in scholarly research and international collaborations. His work has contributed to new systems, theory and studies in human-computer-interaction, education technologies and inclusive design. Some of these technical research papers were published at specialised venues such as SIGGRAPH, IEEE Virtual Systems and Multimedia (VSMM), and Springer’s Virtual Reality.
Biography
Dr Zi Siang See is part of the International Society on Virtual Systems and Multimedia (VSMM) as a Board of Directors committee member, supporting VSMM conferences and as a reviewer, in which role he has co-organised a number of collaborations and research workshops in VSMM. Zi is also the guest editor and a member of the Editorial Board for Virtual Creativity (Intellect Books), a Scopus-indexed international journal focused on emerging technologies and digital creativity. Zi completed his Ph.D. at the University of Newcastle, he has trained under the guidance of Prof Lizbeth Goodman (SMARTlab), Prof Mark Billinghurst (Emphatic Computing Lab / HIT Lab NZ), and supported by A/Prof Craig Hight (UoN). As part of the research for his doctoral thesis focused on human-computer interaction aspects of virtual reality titled Creating High Dynamic Range Spherical Panorama Images for High Fidelity 360 Degree Virtual Reality, Zi developed a method and apparatus solution for creating high fidelity virtual reality 360 (VR360) that is free from major imaging errors and obstacles. Zi’s research and practice are multidisciplinary and bring together the fields of education technologies, digital humanities and digital health.

Expertise
- A capability statement
Zi's research allows him to work closely with the focus of creative pedagogies and would connect very well with the research activities and scholars in the College of Arts, Law and Education (UTAS). He has demonstrated contemporary knowledge of digital technologies theory and practice, with a specialisation in Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) research-creation, particularly in the areas of (i) Education Technologies (such as simulation learning using AR VR in the STEM spaces), (ii) Digital Humanities (the development of digital applications to embed research and creating engaging virtual experiences within galleries, libraries, archives and museums), and (iii) Digital Health (including health simulation and the use of technologies such as VR to support mental well-being and therapeutic services).
- A list of your areas of research expertise
Include:
*Education Technologies – augmented and virtual reality, simulation learning
*Digital Humanities – cultural heritage, placemaking and creative technologies for social inclusion
*Digital Health – interaction design and human-computer-interaction
Collaboration
In early 2021, Zi was invited to be part of the Virtual & Augmented Reality Research Network (VARNN), primarily focused on digital technologies and digital humanities research based in Asia Pacific. This network aims to bring together leading AR and VR researchers to collaborate on multi-institutional projects. The network includes concentrated research hubs at the Center for Research-Creation in Digital Media (Malaysia), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), University College Dublin (Ireland), University of Newcastle (Australia), Charles Sturt University (Australia), Jakarta Institute of Arts (Indonesia), Bangkok University (Thailand) and Heriot-Watt University (UK).
In the past 5 years Zi has developed extensive industry partnerships with businesses and government; In 2020, he was part of a research team working with the City Council of Newcastle on a digital application project ‘The House We Built’, which was developed as a population engagement and elicitation research tool. In 2019, he worked with Centre for Inclusive Design (NSW), a non-profit organisation, and the team co-developed an inclusive ‘XR Interactive Wall’ design process and published a journal paper “Extended Reality Interactive Wall: User Experience Design Research-Creation”. In 2018, he worked closely with a team led by A/Prof Gillian Arrighi and Century (NSW) as part of the philanthropic fund-raising team for the Victoria Theatre - this is the oldest Theatre in NSW and he is leading the virtual reality UX research and prototype development of this multidisciplinary project.
