Alan Henderson is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering. His research interests are applied fluid mechanics and he collaborates with industry in the aquaculture, aerospace and renewable energy sectors.

Biography

Alan has worked as a research and design engineer in the aerospace, aquaculture and renewable energy sectors.  Some of his collaborative research efforts include two Australian Research Council linkage projects with industry partner Hydro Tasmania.  These projects aim to improve the performance of hydropower schemes through mitigation of biofouling effects in open channels, pipes and penstocks; and also through developing the ability to rapidly start hydropower turbines to meet sudden load changes. One of his current research efforts includes an ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for commercial development of lobster culture systems.
Before commencing as a lecturer in mechanical engineering, Alan completed a PhD at the University of Tasmania in a project studying the gas turbine compressors. The research program was sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc, a leading designer and manufacturer of civil and military gas turbine engines.  
Alan teaches several undergraduate and postgraduate units in the engineering discipline: mechanical design, fluid and thermal engineering, and dynamics. As Program Leader for the School of Engineering, Alan takes a leading role in curriculum development and the professional accreditation of engineering programs.

Research Themes

Alan's research relates to the University's theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. His ARC Linkage projects with industry partner Hydro Tasmania focus on improving the efficiency of water conveying systems in hydropower systems and the performance of turbines operating in power systems with increasing contribution of renewable energy.

Description
This project investigates the key design features influencing the flow carrying capacity of a side spillway of a large rockfill dam. A physical model representative of a dam with side spillway will be constructed in the Hydraulics Laboratory of the School of Engineering and ICT. This will be used to conduct a series of experiments to investigate the hydraulic behaviour of the spillway under a range of different flow conditions and design geometry changes. The research will provide information on the design approach required for improving the spillway capacity of this type of dam.

Sense-T Stage 2: Forest and Wood Products (2015 - 2016)$408,079
Description
The proposed project aligns with initiatives led by the National Centre for Future Forestry Industries (NCFFI -‐UTas) in the optimisation of extended forestry value chains. Specifically this project aims to improve the recovery, quality and value of sawn hardwoods by deploying advanced information sensing and modeling technology to air-‐dry sawn boards to Fibre Saturation Point (FSP). This is the critical stage in successful hardwood drying, and a vital segment of the broader forestry value chain. This is a three-‐stage project support by four activity streams. The three stages are 1). Intensive research into sensing, 2). Pilot industry scale sensing and operational trials, and 3). Industry operational trials. The four activity streams are a). Sensor system development that will determine the number and efficacy of sensors operating at a yard, stack and board scales, b).Drying condition model development that will align the information collected with the observed drying behaviour and the potential for whole-‐of-‐site timber management, c). Industry process integration that will ensure technical outcomes can be implemented given industrys current operational capacity, and d). Project 4 management.

Commercial development of rock lobster culture systems: the cutting edge of aquaculture (2012 - 2019)$7,954,545
Description
Researchers will partner with industry to develop innovative aquaculture technology to produce rock lobsters. Lobsters are a valuable and sought after seafood in expanding markets. Current supply relies on wild stocks, many of which are in decline. Previous research has already solved key bottlenecks in production of three species. The project will develop sophisticated culture systems, using unique engineering, state-of-the art hatcheries and plastic manufacturing. Commercial opportunities will result for Australian companies in an international, multi-million dollar aquaculture venture which aims at sustainable food production. Australia will benefit from more sustainable wild fisheries enhanced through the release of seed lobsters.

Rapid Starting and Unsteady Operation of Hydraulic Turbines (2011 - 2014)$223,000
Description
Electric power utilities require rapid backup generation capability to maintain a reliable and secure power supply within stringent frequency limits. The use of hydroelectric turbines allows this to be provided from a renewable source and minimises dam or pumped storage water wastage. This project will investigate the rapid start of Francis turbines transitioning from spinning in air to normal power generation mode. The transition involves a complex two-phase flow as water enters the turbine and expels the air. The innovative combination of a physical model, flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics will provide critical insights into the flow physics to identify the optimum conditions for rapidly starting generation.

Freshwater Biofouling of Hydraulic Conduits: Impact, Mitigation, and Control, and the Consequences of Climate Change (2010 - 2012)$309,154
Description
Biofouling, the growth of nuisance bacteria or algae, is a significant problem in canals and pipelines and causes efficiency losses of up to 10% in hydroelectric power systems. This project aims to develop strategies to maximise renewable electricity production through biofouling mitigation. It will move our understanding of frictional wall flows from typical engineering roughness to more complex interacting organic surfaces, a critical contribution to scientific knowledge. The potential impacts of climate change on the development of biofouling and its impact on operation will also be studied. The data will be applied to improve design methods for conduits and provide industry with tools to identify strategic areas for treatment.
