Damien Holloway
Associate Professor Engineering
Room 312 , Engineering Building
Damien is an Associate Professor and Associate Head Learning and Teaching in Engineering. He is an alumnus of the University of Tasmania with a University Medal, and is interested in architectural acoustics, structural dynamics, vibration, buckling and ship hydrodynamics.
Biography
Damien has undergraduate degrees in both Civil Engineering (for which he was awarded a University Medal) and Music, both from the University of Tasmania, and has completed a Master of Music Qualifying at the University of Queensland. His PhD (University of Tasmania) applied the boundary element method to the time domain study of free surface waves and ship dynamics. He has held postdoctoral positions in the School of Mathematics and Physics and the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania, studying groundwater flows and ship structural dynamics respectively. Prior to his engineering career he worked as a violist in several of Australia's leading professional orchestras.
Damien was appointed lecturer in Engineering at the University of Tasmania in 2005 where he has over time taught the majority of subjects within the Civil and Mechanical engineering degrees, and has received two teaching merit certificates. In recent years his teaching has been predominantly in the areas of structural mechanics, stress analysis and vibrations.
Damien has authored or co-authored over 130 refereed journal and conference papers relating to buckling, ship dynamics and architectural acoustics. The latter exploits his unique combination of qualifications and experience in engineering, music and mathematics.
He has been the Associate Head Learning and Teaching for the School of Engineering since 2019. He has also been Engineering Honours coordinator since 2007, undergraduate degree coordinator since 2011 and was Deputy Head of School 2012-13.

Research Themes
Damien has diverse research interests spanning the three main areas below, linked through an interest in waves, vibrations, fluid-structure interactions and modelling techniques, particularly the Boundary Element and Finite Element methods:
- His work on ship dynamics, following on from his PhD work, aligns with the University's Marine, Antarctic and Maritime theme area. This research is currently concerned with the dynamic response of high speed ships following severe wave impacts ('slam' events). These events are known to induce some of the most severe design loads, but are very poorly predicted using current industry standard techniques. The complex fluid-structure interactions can be modelled using coupled CFD and FEA, but the ship's dynamic response is highly nonlinear and must therefore be solved in the time domain. Such models are extremely computationally intensive, which necessitates compromises and poses many unanswered questions about their applicability, accuracy etc. The research team is also conducting scale model tests and has extensive full scale data from previously instrumented ships, and these are used to develop and validate the numerical techniques.
- Inspired by his musical background and interest in waves and vibrations, Damien is active in architectural acoustics research, which aligns with the University's Creativity, Culture and Society theme area. A recent project, in collaboration with the University of Sydney and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, investigated auditorium stage acoustics from the perspective of the performing musician. Current related work considers the impact of classroom acoustics on student learning.Alongside the stage acoustics research Damien is developing boundary element techniques and applying them to acoustic diffusers, including Schroeder, fractal, procedurally generated random terrain and other enhanced bandwidth designs. With consideration of fluid-structure interactions the boundary element method models are also used to study transmission through panels.
- Damien is interested generally in structural signal processing, structural vibrations and buckling. He has supervised several current and recent PhD and honours projects in the area of buckling of thin walled tubes, ranging from the so-called Yoshimura pattern exhibited by very thin walled tubes to the plastic or non-linear buckling of not so thin walled tubes. These have involved a mix of experimental and computational (FEA) studies. More recently he has applied novel signal processing techniques to structural health monitoring applications, which has overlaps with his work in ship hydrodynamics and extreme load determination.
Collaboration
Damien collaborates on acoustics projects with Assoc Prof Densil Cabrera in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, University of Sydney, Dr Lilyan Panton, acoustic consultant for Helimäki Akustikot, Kuopio, Finland, and Assoc Prof Andrew Legg, Conservatorium of Music, University of Tasmania.
On ship hydrodynamics, Damien collaborates with Prof Giles Thomas (University College London), Daniele Dessi (INSEAN, Italy), Assoc Prof Spiridon Penev (University of New South Wales), and Dr Jason McVicar and Tim Roberts (Revolution Design / Incat).
On structural signal processing, Damien collaborates with Dr Mohsen Mousavi and Prof Amir Gandomi (University of Technology Sydney).

- Description
- The project aims to develop a monitoring system to remotely measure ship motions, loads and ride control activity under commercial operations. Data will be analysed using advanced statistical methods to inform evidence-based design to improve the structural efficiency and passenger comfort. The work is significant as it will impact on design rules used worldwide, reducing weight and increasing payload and transport efficiency for this class of vessel. A "Smart semi-autonomous interface will be developed to provide on-board seakeeping guidance to the ship captain. This technology will lead the way for increasing ship safety, vessel longevity and improving passenger comfort for all types of vessels worldwide including high-speed catamarans.

- Description
- Harvesting trees that contain internal defects such as knots and cracks is neither financially norenvironmentally sustainable. In native forest, high quality sawlogs can only be produced from knotfree logs and forest habitats and ecology can only be maintained by selecting and retaining suitablehabitat trees. Similarly in hardwood plantations it is impossible to produce sawlogs from knotty orcracked timber. For both types of forests challenges remain in being able to identify internal defectsin a timely and cost-effective manner prior to harvesting. This project builds on some preliminary research work that has already generated some promisingresults using ultra-sound for non-destructive assessment of one tree species. This initial 3-day trialwith Tasmanian eucalypts used a Pundit 200 ultrasound device owned by the research team. However, more extensive assessments need to be conducted including on other tree species. It isenvisaged that a 3-4 month field test will be necessary to produce scientifically validate results thatcan also provide data necessary to develop a predictive imputation model.

- Description
- Catamaran transport vessels experience extreme damaging loads during large wave slam events when the crest of a wave impacts on the structure. This is a critical structural design case especially for developing military support. This project will consider the accurate prediction of ship motion in large seas and methods for identification of slams in data sets obtained in sea trials on full size vessels in service. The project will develop analytic algorithms to predict slam loads and duration for incorporation into ship motions and loads computation software. Tank testing will provide a controlled validation of the predictive method.
