Danchi Jiang obtained his Bachelor degree in Mathematics from Wuhan University (China), his Masters degree in Control Systems and Applications from East China Normal University (China), and his PhD in Systems Engineering from the Australian National University. He was awarded the ADCOS scholarship from the Australian Agency for International Development from 1994 to 1998 and a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1996 to 1998.

Biography

Before joining the School of Engineering, Danchi Jiang was working for NICTA in the SEACS program and adjunctly worked for RSISE, ANU since 2003. During that period he initialized several postgraduate courses including Neuro-Dynamic Programming and Supervised literature reading. He has also facilitated, as the major applicant, a joint project between NICTA and Seeing Machine on road safety based on intelligent vision system. Prior to that, he spent five years in the software industry and government as a system developer, designer, analyst, and application systems support specialist in the areas of E-management system and intelligent computing. He has spent two years at Chinese University of Hong Kong as a postdoctoral research fellow, where he has developed many artificial neural network for control system design and signal processing, with applications in robotics. He has also developed the first artificial neural network for semi-definite programming.

Danchi has been actively participating in many professional activities. He has been a reviewer for many technical journals such as IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, etc. He has served in Technical Committees of International Conference on Communication, Circuits, and Systems, in Technical Committees of International Symposium on Neural Networks, etc. Since 2012, he has been appointed as Associate Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Biometrics and Bioinformatics (IJBB).

Danchi's research interests include: advanced signal processing, system learning, optimization, and optimal decision making in Euclidean or non-Euclidean spaces for deterministic or stochastic systems with application in medical image processing, wireless communication, or renewable energy systems, etc. To list a few:

  • Neuro-dynamic programming for renewable energy system design and administration

Current projects

  • Medical Image processing and understanding: this project includes three subprojects for PhD study. The focus is to develop and apply efficient image processing algorithms and systems for better use of medical images such as MRIs, resulting in automatic or semi-automatic processing system for medical practitioners.
  • High speed underwater communication: this project focuses on developing advanced communication technology for more efficient underwater communication.
  • Optimal estimation and control in smart grid systems: this project aims to develop efficient distributed and asynchronised estimation and control methods for smart grid systems

Danchi Jiang published over 50 papers in international technical journals and conferences in the areas of medical image processing, telecommunication, intelligent systems, control systems, and optimization.

He serves regularly in technical committee of a number of international conferences including ISNN, ICIST, AUCC, ISIT, WEIS, ICIP, etc. He is an Associate Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Biometrics and Bioinformatics (IJBB) since 2012.

Identification and characterisation of geological domains for geometallurgical and geoenvironmental modelling (2018 - 2019)$20,000
Description
Mining operations are increasingly reliant on digital geological data to inform all aspects of ore deposit extraction, refinement and remediation. These data, e.g. drill core hyperspectral imagery, contain information on geological features and processes that are typically interpreted by geologists using drill core logs and geochemical assays. Despite this, converting high resolution hyperspectral imagery and associated mineralogical classifications into geological knowledge that informs mine-scale block models is yet to be fully realised. This PhD project will make use of unprecedented access to multi-scale digital geological data from a variety of porphyry and epithermal ore deposits with the overarching aim of defining and characterising geological features relevant to mining operations. Research activities are expected to include investigation, assessment and implementation of image processing and supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods for defining patterns in multi-scale geological data. The outcomes of this project are expected to facilitate the integration of large volumes of digital data from diverse sources with existing geological knowledge in order to develop the next generation of models for ore deposit exploitation. As this PhD project forms part of the ARC Transforming the Mining Value Chain (TMVC) AMIRA P1202 funded "Far-field and near mine footprints" project, specifically within Module 4 "The transition zone". This project will involve close collaboration with TMVC and AMIRA P2102 project industry and academic partners.
