Dr Hongyuan Liu is a lecturer in geomechanics at the School of Engineering in the College of Sciences and Engineering. Hong's research interest is in the field of computational geomechanics, tunnelling, and rock mechanics. In particular, Hong's research focuses on the development of advanced computational methods such as enriched finite element method and hybrid finite-discrete element method and their application in studying rock/rock mass fracture and failure, associated microseismicities, and their interactions with underground fluids such as groundwater, oil, gas and hazardous waste. Hong's research has resulted in 1 book and more than 35 peer-reviewed journal papers including many in the leading geomechanics journals, which has attracted 416 Scopus citations and an h-index of 14 till July 2015.

Biography

Dr Hongyuan Liu's current research at UTAS encompasses the broad areas of computational geomechanics, tunnelling and rock mechanics. He is the coordinator of the Geotechnical Engineering program and teaches KNE273 Geology and Soil Mechanics, KNE372 Mining Methods, KNE373 Geotechnical Engineering and KNE487 Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.

Hong was a research fellow at the Golder Geomechanics Centre led by Prof David Williams within the University of Queensland before being appointed in UTAS in 2010. Prior to joining in UQ in 2008, Hong was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Sydney funded by an ARC Discovery Project 'Effects of Tunnelling on Existing Support System' held by Profs John Small and John Carter.Hong completed his PhD at Lulea University of Technology, Sweden in 2004 and later worked there as a research scientist till moving to Australia in 2006. During the period as a research scientist, Hong, together with Profs Per-Arne Lindqvist and SQ Kou, attracted research grants of over $1M SEK from LKAB, Atlas Copco, SKB's Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory and SGU. Prior to being awarded scholarships by LTU Sweden in 2001, Hong completed his Masters and Bachelor degrees at Northeastern University China in 2000 and 1997, respectively. He was the early developer of the RFPA code led by Cheung Kong Professor Tang.

Research Themes

Hong's research aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. His research interests include understanding failure behaviour of geomaterials under various loads and their interactions with underground fluids such as groundwater, oil, gas and hazardous waste. On one hand, this research helps develop high-tech rock excavation techniques for efficient extraction of natural resources such as minerals, oil and gas in deep underground to stimulate sustainable Australia's economy. On the other hand, this study prevents the geostructures, such as dams, tunnels, foundations, embankments, shafts, slopes and backfills made from these geomaterials from fracture, failure and collapse to safeguard Australia's important infrastructure. Moreover the study on the interaction between geomaterial and underground fluids contributes to management of hazardous waste to protect Australian environment.Hong's research has spread to working with Sandvik and Atlas Copco for developing rock boring tools, Swedish SP and CBI for realistic texture-based microscopic observation, mechanical testing and numerical modelling, Tsinghua in China for tunnel and dam stability, and local Tasmanian mining industry for mechanical testing of rock cores and cemented rockfill. Hong is also working on development and application of enriched finite element method and hybrid finite-discrete element method in geomechanics, which connects him with USTB in China for modelling rock blasting, NEU in China for modelling concrete structure collapse under external collision and blast / earthquake-induced vibration, and CMT, IMS, and DLUT for modelling geomaterial failure-induced microseismicities.

Collaboration

Hong's research focus on computational mechanics, rock mechanics and tunnelling, which connects him to collaborate with several universities, research organisations and civil and mining industries across Australia, Europe and Asia.

Current projects

  • Development and application of a hybrid continuous-discontinuous model: the project is aimed to develop a hybrid model for transition from continua to discontinua of geomaterials during geostructure failure, and interaction between the geomaterials, initiated cracks and underground fluids such as groundwater, oil, gas and hazardous waste, which has wide applications in ground improvement, coal seam gas, hydraulic fracturing, gas outburst, and geothermal energy.
  • Dynamic fracture of rock under impact loads: this project investigates the failure behaviour of hard and brittle rock under static & dynamic loads with various loading rates and the microseismicity associated with rock failure, i.e. the elastic energy release. This research is aimed to improve rock fragmentation efficiency, control the excavation damage/distributed zone, and design appropriate support and reinforcement system in mechanical excavation and rock blasting.
  • Effects of tunnelling on adjacent structures: this project develops full three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analysis software for tunnelling and structure interaction, which takes into account the presence of the adjacent structure, the tunnelling procedure, the interaction between the shotcrete lining and ground, the interaction between the rock bolts and ground, and the elasto-plastic behaviour of the support system and ground. This research is aimed to develop an design chart for effects of tunnelling on adjacent structures for various ground conditions, structures and tunnelling techniques.
  • Geomaterial characterisation using integrated microscopic observation, image analysis, mechanical test and numerical modelling: the microstructure of geomaterials is first observed using various kinds of microscopes and characterised by quantitative image analysis. Microstructural and/or micromechanical models are then built on the basis of geomaterial microstructure or its characterised parameters and numerically tested under various loading conditions to investigate the relationship between geomaterial microstructure and breakage properties and evaluate its mechanical properties as rock aggregates, decoration materials or other construction materials.

This project aims to conduct a parametric study on the factors influencing the geothermal outburst using the hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) parallelized on the basis of the general purpose graphic processing unit (GPGPU). The main factors include the rock mass strength (intact rock and joints), steam pressure, joint network (interconnectivity of the joint network) and various geometries of a bench scale problem.
