Dr Ali-Lavroff completed his bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree with honours at Monash University, specialising in the area of fluid mechanics. In 2005 he commenced research on high-speed Incat wave-piercer catamarans to investigate hydrodynamic structural loads and slam induced whipping vibration responses. In 2009 Dr Ali-Lavroff completed his PhD and was appointed lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Tasmania. Prior to his appointment as lecturer, Dr Ali-Lavroff was involved in various other roles while working as a Mechanical Engineer at Cadbury Schweppes, Australian Maritime College, Incat and Gutteridge Haskins and Davies (GHD). Currently, Dr Ali-Lavroff is pursuing his research interests with Incat on high-speed wave piercer catamarans with on-going research projects in the areas of dynamics, vibrations, propulsion, structural loads, motions response and motion control. In addition Dr Ali-Lavroff is presently the academic supervisor of UTAS Motorsport Engineering Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) in the yearly development of a student designed and built FSAE racing car. As part of Service to the Community, Dr Ali-Lavroff is also directly involved with and President of the UTAS Car and Motorcycle Society.

Biography

Dr Jason Ali-Lavroff completed his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering at Monash University following a final year honours project based on motorcycle aerodynamics investigating aerodynamic flow through wind tunnel measurements and on-road testing. During his final year he was also involved with developing an engineering curriculum for primary schools and worked with teachers to implement a teaching program for students in grades 5 and 6.

Following graduation Dr Ali-Lavroff worked as a research assistant at the AMC cavitation tunnel providing design assistance in the development of instrumentation and equipment. Projects included the development of a propeller dynamometer and a 6-degree of freedom force transducer to measure forces on under water appendages. Soon after Dr Ali-Lavroff commenced his PhD at UTAS in collaboration with Incat and AMC on wave induced structural loads and motions response through the development of a hydroelastic segmented catamaran model. This project was funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Incat to identify peak loads and motions response of the 112m Incat wave-piercer catamaran through towing tank testing in head-seas. Today Dr Ali-Lavroff is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at UTAS pursuing his research interests with Incat on structural loads and motions response. In addition Dr Ali-Lavroff is presently leading the UTAS FSAE Motorsport Engineering team in the development of an electric Formula SAE racing car.

Teaching expertise

Dr Ali-Lavroff commenced teaching primary school children in the final year of his honours degree at Monash University. Following this he became involved with undergraduate teaching at the University Tasmania in particular during his PhD candidature that was then pursued during his appointment as lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. His main teaching interests in the areas of dynamics and mechanical design fit in closely with his research work with Incat and his involvement with FSAE.

Research Themes

The aims of the research undertaken in collaboration with Incat are to: identify peak structural loads and motions response as well as predicting resistance to determine propulsion requirements. This work is undertaken to improve vessel performance through improvements in hull and structural design by undertaking research using model scale tests, full-scale analysis and CFD. Model scale tests are undertaken based on a hydroeleastic segmented model instrumented specifically to measure vertical bending moments, centre bow slam loads and motions response in headseas whilst simulating the vibration response of the full-scale vessel. The results from model scale tests are compared to measurements taken at full-scale during sea trials undertaken on Incat wave-piercer catamarans. The sea trials involve measurement of ship motions, structural loads and engine power to determine vessel performance. More recently sophisticated methods have been developed to predict the motions response, vessel loads and powering requirements using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Collaboration

Research collaboration is presently being undertaken with Incat, Revolution Design, Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of College London (UCL), University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Italian Institute of Research (INSEAN) for work undertaken on high-speed ocean going vessels.

Remote sensing to improve structural efficiency of high-speed catamarans (2018 - 2022)$620,000
Description
The project aims to develop a monitoring system to remotely measure ship motions, loads and ride control activity under commercial operations. Data will be analysed using advanced statistical methods to inform evidence-based design to improve the structural efficiency and passenger comfort. The work is significant as it will impact on design rules used worldwide, reducing weight and increasing payload and transport efficiency for this class of vessel. A "Smart semi-autonomous interface will be developed to provide on-board seakeeping guidance to the ship captain. This technology will lead the way for increasing ship safety, vessel longevity and improving passenger comfort for all types of vessels worldwide including high-speed catamarans.
