Associate Professor Wang enjoys a strong record in research fields including thermodynamics, cooling engineering, desalination and utilization of renewable energy. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and member of the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies. He won the DAAD visiting fellowship by DAAD Germany in 2003 and Ludwig Mond Prize 2005, by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) of United Kingdom. He won the Australian China Young Scientist Exchange Program award in 2009 and the Australian Japan Emerging Research Leader Program award in 2016 by the Australia Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). He received “Dean’s Award” for outstanding research performance in 2016. He was named as Field Leader in thermal science by the Australian in 2018. He is Associate Editor of Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineering and editorial board member for Review of Applied Physics, and International Journal of Mechanical Systems Engineering.

Biography

Associate Professor Wang received his B.Eng and Ph.D. degrees from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China in 1994 and 1999, respectively. After he worked in the industry in Singapore for three years, he started his academic career as a Research Fellow (A) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the National University of Singapore in 2002. In 2003, he was invited by DAAD, Germany to work as a visiting scientist at the University of Siegen, Germany. In 2005, he joined the School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, the University of Western Australia as a Lecturer and was promoted to Research Associate Professor in 2009. In July 2012, he joined the School of Engineering, University of Tasmania. Xiaolin has extensive industrial experiences in the thermodynamics of cooling and power systems, heat pump technologies and process development. Xiaolin has completed many research projects with a total value of over $6 million and published more than 130 journal and conference papers. He is a regular reviewer for funding agencies such as Australian Research Council, Australia and international journals such as EnergyApplied EnergyApplied Thermal EngineeringSolar EnergyInternational Journal of Thermal SciencesChemical Physics Letter and Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineering.

Publications

A/Prof. Wang has published more than 100 journal and conference papers in the top engineering journals and conferences. One of his papers won the best paper award in the Journal of Process Engineering. He was invited to write a patent review and two positions papers. He is also holding five patents. His patent 'adsorption-assisted desalination' has been licensed to industry and another patent 'a desalination plant' has attracted $75k funding from industry as well.

Grants & Funding

Associate Professor Wang has received about $5 million research grants since he moved to Australia. He was one of the foundation members of the Western Australian Geothermal Centre of Excellence which was awarded $2.3 Million by the WA state government in 2008. He received about $185K LIEF grant from the ARC in 2010 and $235K research grant from National Centre of Excellence in Desalination in 2011. Since he joined UTAS in 2012,Associate Professor Wang has received more than $2.2 million research funding from ARC, US Navy Research and industry.

Synthetic Storage for Improving Flexibility and Security of Micro-Grids (2018 - 2021)$380,000
Description
This project aims to remove the need for energy storage in micro-grids via adoption of synthetic storage. Micro-grids encounter high renewable energy penetrations early, given their small size. Typically, micro-grid variability is managed with technologies such as energy storage. Synthetic storage involves replacing fixed speed diesel assets with variable speed diesel technology. This approach offers a much more cost-effective way to improve renewable penetration and reduce diesel fuel consumption in micro-grids by removing the need for expensive energy storage. The expected project outcomes include reductions in cost and complexity for high renewable energy penetration micro-grids, reduced emissions and improved micro-grid reliability.

The project aims to investigate and optimise no load diesel application within remote area renewable hybrid powersystems. While hundreds of remote Australian communities rely on expensive and polluting diesel for powergeneration, this project will increase penetration of alternative renewable sources into remote and isolated powersystems. AUSTRALIA JAPAN EMERGING RESEARCH LEADERS travel to Japan (2016)$11,213
Description
The Australia Japan Emerging Research Leaders Exchange Program (ERLEP) is an importantinternational collaborative linkages program which aims to establish individual and institutional S&Tresearch linkages between Australia and Japan. The scheme is targeted at mid-career researchers ofboth countries who are emerging leaders in the Science and Technology community.The program began in 2010 with funding from the former Department of Innovation, Industry, Scienceand Research (DIISR) and the Japanese Society for the Promotion for Science (JSPS).The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) and the Engineering Academy ofJapan (EAJ) administer the exchange program.To date, 33 Japanese researchers have travelled to Australia to undertake two weeks of individualinstitutional visits, and 23 Australian researchers have travelled to Japan to undertake the same modelof exchange. With these visits, the 56 researchers have collectively engaged with over 1,500researchers in their respective fields of expertise.ERLEPs success is reflected in key outcomes such as collaborative projects, joint publications,international conferences, and staff and student exchanges.

Low Load Diesel Technology Demonstration (2015 - 2017)$749,146
Description
The proposal will investigate and optimise low load operating thresholds in modern multi-cylinder diesel generators. Operating thresholds will be established via controlled operation of a remote power system integrated diesel generator. Optimisation of the units low load capabilities will subsequently be explored via modification to the engine, possibly including cooling, injector, cylinder, exhaust and/or charge air cooling sub-system refinement. This work is motivated by a need to explore low load capabilities of modern diesel engines, primarily concerned with integrating maximum renewable penetration into any remote power system. Diesels accounts for the vast majority of new and existing generation into off-grid and remote power systems, yet renewables offer cost competitive supply alternatives (Frischknecht, 2014). A key roadblock to greater renewable penetration remains the performance of the diesel engines and their inability to run at low loads. The lower you can run your diesel, the more renewable penetration can be achieved. Just how to achieve sustained low load operation, while maintaining power quality is the problem addressed within this proposal.

Increasing renewable energy penetration through embedded renewable micro-grids (2014)$8,000
Description
This project will explore the role of primary producers within the Tasmanian network, leveraging both existing and future energy demand associated with a major Tasmanian primary producer. Using this existing facility to investigate how multiple embedded renewable energy technologies can contribute to reduced operational and environmental costs, this project aims to oversee the design implementation and operation of an embedded renewable micro-grid. Research will determine renewable technologies currently financially viable for integration within a private HV grid context.

Research Supervision

Associate Professor Wang has supervised a number of Ph.D. students to completion in the field of thermodynamics, heat pump, energy storage, desalination, and adsorption engineering. He is looking for potential Ph.D. students working on projects: phase change energy storage, gas storage, desalination, air-conditioning, heat pump, and renewable energy.
