- Globally, as the aquaculture sector moves operations further offshore, the sector is encountering new challenges to access clean and reliable energy. Without shore-based power, energy intensive offshore aquaculture operations such as feeding barges become reliant on diesel generators with many associated costs, risks and carbon emissions. However, the shift into energy intensive offshore wave environments presents an opportunity to utilise an untapped energy source constantly flowing around the facilities, wave energy. Carnegies wave powered barge concept, MoorPower offers a solution to this energy challenge providing clean, reliable, predictable energy to support growth of a diverse sustainable blue economy. The project will develop and prototype a barge with integrated wave energy converters, based on integrating Carnegies CETO power take-off technology into the barges mooring tensioners, as a demonstrator for future development of a commercial wave-powered feed barge designed for offshore salmon farms. Building on the recent aquaculture energy demand scoping study, as part of the Energy Demand Study within this project, UTAS will deploy further instrumentation on Huons Storm Bay barges to expand the BECRCs knowledge. In addition, UTAS will provide input into the projects instrumentation, operations and data analysis activities. UTAS will also conduct research on the suitability of and requirements for different energy storage technologies to be incorporated into a feed barge design, in particular with compressed air storage being investigated for direct coupling to the feed barge feed pellet delivery system. Note: UTASs in-kind contribution includes the value of a PhD student already working on compressed air storage for offshore renewables, who will benefit from participation in the project, over the standard 3.5 year HDR project term (as per directions from the BE CRC Research Director). The project will be led by Carnegie Clean Energy, with UTAS as a key R&D project partner. Other key partners being Huon and Tassal, the Australian Ocean Energy Group, and Advanced Composite Structures Australia. The demonstrator feed barge will be developed and tested in waters off the Fremantle coast, while barges currently operating in Storm Bay near Hobart will be used for instrumentation, monitoring and modelling purposes in this project.

- Description
- Photovoltaics, batteries, supercapacitors, electrolysers and fuel cells are all natively DC. DC power is common in marine settings. Networking these components into a microgrid using high-efficiency DCDC converters is logical, but problematic in practice, and few suitable DCDC converters are available commercially. Most microgrids are presently AC coupled with grid connection, therefore, involving multiple AC-DC conversions and issues of frequency synchronisation and voltage stabilisation. This project will examine the barriers to setting up pure-DC microgrids and create a bench-scale pure-DC hydrogen microgrid for experiments aiming to understand and resolve issues including transient response and control of the DC bus voltage.

- Description
- This project aims to remove the need for energy storage in micro-grids via adoption of synthetic storage. Micro-grids encounter high renewable energy penetrations early, given their small size. Typically, micro-grid variability is managed with technologies such as energy storage. Synthetic storage involves replacing fixed speed diesel assets with variable speed diesel technology. This approach offers a much more cost-effective way to improve renewable penetration and reduce diesel fuel consumption in micro-grids by removing the need for expensive energy storage. The expected project outcomes include reductions in cost and complexity for high renewable energy penetration micro-grids, reduced emissions and improved micro-grid reliability.

- Description
- The project aims to investigate and optimise no load diesel application within remote area renewable hybrid powersystems. While hundreds of remote Australian communities rely on expensive and polluting diesel for powergeneration, this project will increase penetration of alternative renewable sources into remote and isolated powersystems. Using dual thermodynamic and electrical modeling, this project will specifically investigate low to no loaddiesel threshold capability, reducing diesel consumption at minimal costs. The project will return immediatebenefits to remote mining, defence and tourism based communities, providing a pathway to reduce diesel usageand increased renewable penetration.

- The Australia Japan Emerging Research Leaders Exchange Program (ERLEP) is an importantinternational collaborative linkages program which aims to establish individual and institutional S&Tresearch linkages between Australia and Japan. The scheme is targeted at mid-career researchers ofboth countries who are emerging leaders in the Science and Technology community. The program began in 2010 with funding from the former Department of Innovation, Industry, Scienceand Research (DIISR) and the Japanese Society for the Promotion for Science (JSPS).The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) and the Engineering Academy ofJapan (EAJ) administer the exchange program. To date, 33 Japanese researchers have travelled to Australia to undertake two weeks of individualinstitutional visits, and 23 Australian researchers have travelled to Japan to undertake the same modelof exchange. With these visits, the 56 researchers have collectively engaged with over 1,500researchers in their respective fields of expertise.ERLEPs success is reflected in key outcomes such as collaborative projects, joint publications, international conferences, and staff and student exchanges.

- Description
- The proposal will investigate and optimise low load operating thresholds in modern multi-cylinder diesel generators. Operating thresholds will be established via controlled operation of a remote power system integrated diesel generator. Optimisation of the units low load capabilities will subsequently be explored via modification to the engine, possibly including cooling, injector, cylinder, exhaust and/or charge air cooling sub-system refinement. This work is motivated by a need to explore low load capabilities of modern diesel engines, primarily concerned with integrating maximum renewable penetration into any remote power system. Diesels accounts for the vast majority of new and existing generation into off-grid and remote power systems, yet renewables offer cost competitive supply alternatives (Frischknecht, 2014). A key roadblock to greater renewable penetration remains the performance of the diesel engines and their inability to run at low loads. The lower you can run your diesel, the more renewable penetration can be achieved. Just how to achieve sustained low load operation, while maintaining power quality is the problem addressed within this proposal.

- This project will explore the role of primary producers within the Tasmanian network, leveraging both existing and future energy demand associated with a major Tasmanian primary producer. Using this existing facility to investigate how multiple embedded renewable energy technologies can contribute to reduced operational and environmental costs, this project aims to oversee the design implementation and operation of an embedded renewable micro-grid. Research will determine renewable technologies currently financially viable for integration within a private HV grid context.
