Lucy is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing . An award-winner writer for young people, Lucy’s research interests centre on creative writing, with specific focus on writing for young people, empathy, psychology, place, and ecocriticism. Lucy has taught in many countries and for many organisations, including residential tutoring for Arvon Writing Centres, Ty Newydd Writing Centre and for Loutro Writers. She established Mexican Writing Retreats; luxury creative writing courses run in the central highlands of Mexico. She frequently visits schools to talk about her work for young people.

Biography

Lucy has been a professional writer and academic in Creative Writing for over fifteen years. As an award-winning and best-selling author, with wide international readership; Lucy’s Young Adult books are published in over twenty countries. She has also written for children and adults, both in non-fiction and fiction, in short form and longer form, as well as for script and screen. Her books have won a Printz Honor Award, the Branford Boase Award, the Prix Farniente, the Gold Inky, the audience choice award for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book for Older Readers, and an International Reading Association Award. She has been shortlisted for the Australian Prime Minister’s Awards, the Costa Book Awards, the Waterstones Prize, and longlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

Previously, Lucy worked for the University of Wales as an Associate Lecturer, and then for Bath Spa University as a Reader in Creative Writing and as the Course Director of the MA in Writing for Young People. As Course Director, she led and ran the most successful Master’s Degree course of its kind in Europe, steering its direction and reputation. She also received her PhD in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University. This explored the conscious and unconscious influences that shaped her in becoming a writer for young people; most particularly, she looked at her early experiences of wild Australian land and its formative influence.

Administrative expertise

Lucy has much administrative and managerial expertise, having run the MA in Writing for Young People for Bath Spa University. Here, she managed a team of academics, as well as coordinated a large student cohort. She was on the leadership team for the university’s Research Group in Writing for Young People.

Teaching

Teaching expertise

Lucy has taught writing for young people, foundation creative writing, workshop modules, genre fiction, the short story, contemporary children’s publishing and environmental literature, all at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has developed and coordinated many instances of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Creative Writing, and as Course Director for the MA in Writing for Young People she coordinated and developed the entire teaching programme. She has also taught extensively as a visiting writer at residential retreats, schools, and at writing festivals.

Expertise

Lucy uses practise-led research to advance readers’ empathy for others and to facilitate thoughtful engagement with the world. Her practise-led research, together with her teaching, also influences, advances, and shapes the discipline of creative writing, its industry and the next generation of writers. Her work has furthered knowledge in a range of academic disciplines and influenced and impacted non-academic communities. Her research can be categorised into both practise-led creative writing, and also critical work resulting from and around her creative writing, and stretches across academic research, educational institutions, popular culture, and mainstream media. She has a particular specialism in writing for young people.

In 2019 – 2021, Lucy worked with web developer, Rajiv Edward, to write and develop a piece of digital storytelling. This attracted a £5,000 research grant from Paper Nations creative thinktank and was developed into a piece of place-based smartphone fiction for a young adult audience called The Fog.

In her previous work for Bath Spa University, Lucy instigated and managed the international collaboration between Bath Spa and Vermont College of Fine Arts (USA). She also sought and managed professional partnerships for the MA in Writing for Young People, including with United Agents, Skylark Agency, Oxford University Press, and Nosy Crow Publishers. In 2018, together with the Institute for Education, she ran a storytelling research project, which explored running educational and cross-cultural creative writing workshops. This project received SEED funding from the Environmental Humanities Research Group. She was also part of a cross-disciplinary team involved in a significant bid for the Creative Writing Department which secured £1.2 million from the Arts Council over a period of three years from 2015 – 2018.

Current projects

Lucy is editing her first book for adults, Release, which will be published in 2022. She is also working on her next picture book for publication, as well as her first verse novel for young adults. Having recently completed a walk around the circumference of Wales over six summers, Lucy is now using this research for a narrative non-fiction creative work concerning place, walking, creativity, and identity. She will shortly begin research for her next novel for adults.

Publications

Lucy’s debut novel for young adults, Stolen, was published in over twenty countries, won a Printz Honor Award and the Branford Boase Award, and has sold in the region of 250,000 copies worldwide. Her subsequent novels for young adults were also published in many countries and won and were shortlisted for many awards, including shortlistings for the Costa Novel Award, the Waterstones Prize and the Australian Prime Minister’s Awards. Her novel Flyaway won an International Reading Award. Her picture books with Lantana Publishing have consistently attracted favourable reviews worldwide, while her first novel for adults, Release, will be published simultaneously in the UK and Australia by Text Publishing in 2022. In 2021, Lucy collaborated with Rajiv Edward to produce her first piece of digital storytelling, The Fog, which was highlighted in the MiX Conference of the same year. She has also published articles in The Guardian online, Psychologies magazine, The Big Issue UK, The New Welsh Review, and for academic journal Write4Children.

In 2021, Lucy was awarded a Develop Your Creative Practice Grant from the Arts Council of England to develop and write a verse novel. This is for £3255

In 2019, together with Rajiv Edward, Lucy won funding from Paper Nations Creative Thinktank to develop a piece of digital fiction. This was for £5,000.

In 2018, Lucy was awarded funding from the K Blundell Trust for £3500 for research for her novel, Release.

In 2016, Lucy secured Bath Spa University seed funding of £3,765.94 to begin her narrative non-fiction project, Edge.

In 2014, she was part of a cross-disciplinary team involved in a significant bid for the Creative Writing Department at Bath Spa, one which secured 1.2 million from the Arts Council over a period of three years from 2015 – 2018.

In 2007, Lucy was successful in receiving full Arts and Humanities Research Council funding for her PhD in Creative Writing, this amounted to the sum of £36,000. AHRC also covered her academic fees. She secured a further £1,000 from the AHRC for international research needed to complete her novel, Stolen

Research Supervision

Lucy is an experienced supervisor of PhDs in Creative Writing. She has coordinated and appointed VIVA and Progression Assessment panels, supervision plans, and workshop programs. She has acted as internal and external examiner on PhD in Creative Writing Viva panels, both in the UK and Australia. At Bath Spa University, she worked on the PhD in Creative Writing Low-residency programme as a guest supervisor.

At a Masters level, Lucy has supervised approximately forty students to completion on their manuscript projects, mentoring all aspects within writing for young people but specialising in contemporary young adult fiction.

Lucy has also mentored novel projects, assessed manuscripts and provided short- and long- term coaching to authors.
