Billy began his academic career in Mathematics and the Sciences, specialising in Pure Mathematics before moving into a study of the German language. Billy is a Senior Lecturer in German at the School of Humanities in the College of Arts, Law and Education.

Biography

After completing his PhD at the University of Tasmania, Billy was a Lecturer in German at Massey University in New Zealand, before returning to the University in 2005.

Teaching expertise

Billy has taught German at all levels, from introductory to units in Honours. He specialises in the teaching of introductory units and has written and produced his own textbooks Bausteine 1 & Bausteine 2 that have a strong Tasmanian place-based focus. He also produces a companion video series publicly available on YouTube.

Billy’s has developed a number of studies units, ranging from German for Business and Tourism, to Translation Units and units in Film and Literature, with a strong focus on 20 Century pop culture.

Expertise

    Billy uses a variety of methods of textual analysis to investigate a wide range of primarily oral and auditive art forms, including oral poetry,  hip-hop, slam poetry, electronic music, music concrete and other experimental forms of artistic expression. His research is primarily in German and his research is published in monographs and leading journals.
