Dr Bonnie Bereznicki is a pharmacist and part-time early-mid career academic. She completed her PhD in 2011, which focused on using a computerised solution to improve the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Her research interests have since expanded to improving the quality use of medicines, and she has led several national research projects examining how patients’ knowledge, expectations and perceptions impact their health outcomes. Dr Bereznicki has been a Lecturer in Pharmacological Sciences at the School of Medicine since 2011 and has taught across several pharmacology units in different courses within the School.
Biography
Dr Bereznicki graduated from the Tasmanian School of Pharmacy in 2002. She worked as a community pharmacist in pharmacies throughout Tasmania and Queensland, before returning to the University of Tasmania in 2007 to undertake postgraduate research degrees in pharmacy. She graduated with first class Honours in 2007, and then received an Australian Postgraduate Award to undertake her PhD, which she completed in 2011. Dr Bereznicki’s PhD research focused on using a computerised solution (data mining) within community pharmacies to identity and subsequently educate people with poorly managed asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She has since developed a strong record in respiratory and quality use of medicines research and has been a member of the Tasmania Asthma Foundation’s Medical and Scientific Advisory committee since 2009. Dr Bereznicki has attracted more than $2 million in competitive funding and published 28 original and professional peer-reviewed papers during her career. Bonnie is also a Lecturer in Pharmacological Sciences at the School of Medicine and supervises several Honours and PhD students within the school.

- Description
- Based on our prospective adverse drug reaction (ADR) registry:1*15% of medical admissions to Tasmanian public hospitals in elderly patients were ADR-related,*89% were preventable,*17% patients had a repeat ADR within 12 months, and*One third of patients with repeat ADRs experienced the same ADR caused by the same medications. From this clinical registry, we developed and validated an ADR risk prediction score (PADR-EC).2We hypothesise that ADR risk stratification during hospitalisation and communication of this risk, together with recommendations that target the specific risk factors identified, to GPs at discharge will reduce the risk of ADR-related hospitalisation.Design: A randomised controlled trial (RCT) at the Royal Hobart Hospital, the major public hospital in Tasmania.Population: Over 12-months, 1000 patients ≥65 years with unplanned admissions to medical wards will be recruited and randomly allocated to intervention or control groups.Intervention: A researcher will perform an ADR risk assessment using the PADR-EC Score,2 which is the sum of points assigned to 5 independent predictors of ADR-related hospitalisation. Based on the PADR-EC Score and the specific risk factors identified, recommendations to reduce the risk of ADRs will be determined.Recommendations will relate to:*post-discharge medication management services, *monitoring of specific parameters/medications, and *de-prescribing strategies. The PADR-EC Score and recommendations will be communicated to the patient and clinical team during hospitalisation, and the patient's GP, alongside the usual information, in the electronic discharge summary. Control: Usual hospital care, with GPs receiving the standard discharge summary.Follow up: All participants will be followed by the research team for 12-months to identify ADRs (including their management and outcome) and health services received.Outcomes: ADR-related hospitalisation (primary); ADRs requiring hospital treatment, change in therapy or specific treatment (secondary). The study will be powered to detect a 5% difference in the primary outcome

- Description
- This project will provide the first economic assessment of the burden of allergic respiratory disease (allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma) in Tasmania. Together, allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma affect over 20% of the Tasmanian population, yet there has been no rigorousanalysis of the health and economic impacts. This project will cost the direct and indirect costs of these conditions across Tasmania. In doing so, we will provide a rigorous evidence base to build a case for allergic respiratory research, and directly inform government and non-government investment in interventions. Our research will be co-designed with expert input from government and non-government stakeholders (Asthma Australia) to ensure alignment with end-user needs.

- Description
- We will conduct a cluster randomised trial, with asthma control being the main inclusion criterion and clinical outcome measured. The three study arms are: Group A (Pharmacy Asthma Service): eligible patients will receive four private consultations with the pharmacist, at baseline, one month, six months (via telephone) and 12 months. The consultations will focus on addressing three key factors associated with uncontrolled asthma: suboptimal adherence characterised by underuse of preventer medication and/or overuse of reliever medication; suboptimal inhaler technique; and/or uncontrolled allergic rhinitis. At each visit, asthma control and a number of secondary outcomes will be assessed. Group B (Low intervention and referral): Patients identified with uncontrolled asthma by the pharmacist will be referred to their general practitioner. Clinical outcomes will be assessed at one month and 12 months. Group C (Usual Care): The third group will be recruited from a comparable sample of patients with asthma, matched by age, gender and asthma control scores from general practice medical records. Asthma control and secondary outcomes for this group will be assessed by the project group at baseline and 12 months.
